Pleased to see research I've been working on with @annemeng_ and @jackpaine_prof on rebel regimes featured in the @nytimes Interpreter column this week. @amandataub did a really nice job summarizing our paper, and discussing its implications for what comes next in #Syria. Link 👇

My paper with @kbclarke & @jackpaine_prof, “Violent Origins and Authoritarian Order: Divergent Trajectories after Successful Rebellions,” was featured in a NYT article analyzing recent events in Syria. Thanks so much @amandataub! nytimes.com/2024/12/12/wor…

Brief thread on A&R regime transitions model, possibly of interest given ongoing Nobel discussion Summary: Intuitive, tractable framework that scholars can productively build on to address other important questions

Briefly—the core mechanics of the A&R commitment problem framework are very flexible Can think of their work as adding a strategic choice of institutional reform to models of commitment problems of conflict developed in IR (Powell, Fearon, etc.)

Amazing! Their research has had an immeasurable impact on my career And collaborating and otherwise hanging out with Jim the last few years has been incredibly rewarding on both a personal and professional level. Incredibly kind and generous with his time So excited for them!

This new paper by Clarke/Meng/paine helps us understand the Sudanese Civil War and choices of the armed groups. One important fact of the war has been that almost all rebel groups have sided with the SAF over the RSF, despite RSF victories. Why? @annemeng_ @jackpaine_prof
