A PM in a strong position could simply sack a cabinet minister for perceived disloyalty. Pretty much any other course of action in that situation merely highlights the weakness of a PM’s position. Symptom more than cause, but in this case arguably making things even worse.

Have been thinking for some time about, from Labour’s perspective, when would be the most sensible time to change leadership. Waiting from budget to May/June 2026 loses another 10% of their term in office. More, obviously, if they go for an election sooner than mid-2029.

EXCL: Downing Street has launched an extraordinary operation to protect Keir Starmer amid fears among PM’s closest allies he is vulnerable to leadership challenge in wake of budget.

Interesting aspect of this: the story is about a reported UK decision on intelligence sharing, but is broken by a reporter working on US defense issues for a US outlet. The sourcing is deliberately veiled, but presumably from the US side.

Exclusive--The UK has suspended sharing intelligence with the US about suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean because it does not want to be complicit in US military strikes and believes they are illegal, sources tell CNN. edition.cnn.com/2025/11/11/pol…

This is an interesting EU/intel story. My question would be why the existing IntCen couldn't be augmented/revised to deliver whatever the new body is envisaged to provide, particularly given the reported emphasis on non-duplication.

Good discussion this morning in our @warstudies National Security Studies module. We discussed, inter alia, whether NSAs should have a public profile, or risk ceding the initiative/narrative to critics. A question depicted irreverently here, through the medium of cartoon cats.

Assuming the friends of the DNSA are serving officials, that’s quite a govt briefing war. CPS is going to have to respond and clarify.

Friends of deputy national security adviser Matt Collins tell @ShippersUnbound he provided sufficient evidence and "doesn’t understand" why China spying case was dropped. "He provided all of these evidence statements. He was told by the CPS that this was exactly what they…
