The harm and abuse our government inflicted on the people they chose to force to brutal overseas detention camps are reason enough for a Royal Commission - with or without the serious, multiple allegations of bribery and corruption. Powerful speech from Senator @NickMcKim.

Maddening to see Gov’t deflect & distract from broader issues plaguing immigration detention. Australians deserve to know the truth about how this secret, cruel system continues to operate. Nothing less than a Royal Commission will deliver #auspol smh.com.au/politics/feder…

No matter who we are or where we are from, we all deserve to be safe. The last refugees are finally off Nauru, a decade after our government forcibly detained them there to score political points. 80 people still remain trapped in PNG. asrc.org.au/2023/06/25/ref…

One can both acknowledge under this Australian Government there is hope for positive change for people seeking asylum unlike the previous one and yet call out each day it’s failure to deliver on what it promised in opposition. People can’t just stay in limbo & poverty forever.

This government allocated a paltry $37m to the threadbare safety net for people waiting years for an answer from a refugee process designed to punish, not protect. That's 2% of the $1.85 billion they found to lock people up in immigration detention and hold refugees on Nauru.

Budgets are moral documents. They express the values and priorities of a government. If the ALP fund huge tax cuts for the extremely wealthy but don't #RaiseTheRateForAll, they are telling you where their values are. Believe them. #Auspol2023

Cannot be thankful enough for the launch of @GuardianAus ten years ago, and the incredible work of so many brilliant journalists since. Doubly so given the dismantling of professional journalism at the SMH and Age in the same period. Best $100 a year investment you can make.

Pretty cool how we have politicians regularly admit they "couldn't live" on the current welfare rate, and then just move on, as if putting people in a position that makes it impossible to LIVE is just fine.
