This year's ouzel breeding season in Rosedale has ended and results continue to be disappointing. It's the second consecutive year that low adult returns have been recorded and follows a worrying trend of wider national decline. The reasons remain a mystery.
So pleased to say that my 300+ sound recordings of the Ring Ouzel song are now safely archived at the University of York Borthwick Institute for Archives. This is a unique collection of the North York Moors Ring Ouzel song in the early part of the 21 century.
The switch to stronger south-easterly winds did the trick, with a shake-up of migrants present today; 13 Ring Ouzel and a Blue-headed Wagtail our highlights, with full totals on the website as usual: fairislebirdobs.co.uk/latest_sightin… 📷T Wright
This lovely female Ring Ouzel made its way into Vaadal on this mornings trap rounds. Always a treat to see up close. The pale-scaled appearance to the underparts is beautiful.
Todays light southerly breeze and drizzle delivered a small arrival of migrants @FI_Obs. A lovely male Ring Ouzel showed unusually well for this typically shy species. However, my highlight was watching a Grasshopper Warbler scurry up and down a small burn on Ward Hill!
First male Ring Ouzel arrived in Rosedale today. Previous earliest date was the 21 March so today's arrival continues the long-term trend towards arrival dates becoming earlier.
Our first PECHORA PIPIT since 2019 teased us today, plus the autumn's first Olive-backed Pipit during what was an excellent day for Redwings. A Lanceolated Warbler, Hoopoe, Little Bunting & Arctic Redpoll were also logged. Read all about it: fairislebirdobs.co.uk/latest_sightin… 📸D Gornall
Look out for signs at Stanage & Burbage indicating the presence nearby of Ring Ouzel nests & heed the directions to avoid those areas. Climbers & walkers have earned a good reputation for being willing to share our gritstone uplands with these special birds. 📸 @kimleyland
Ring ouzels still showing well on Cleeve Common this morning. A nice year tick, along with wheatear 🐦 #GlosBirds #BirdsOfTwitter
Bredon Hill - At least 16 Ring Ouzels on escarpment early this morning. @WorcsBirding #Worcsbirds
A late evening visit to @CleeveCommon - still basking in hazy sun, but difficult to bird with winds gusting upto 40mph. Regular spots duly checked with no success, but patient searching finally produced a notable count of 12 Ring Ouzels, feeding in a sheltered gully #GlosBirds
A single ring ouzel calling near Manstone Rock on our #Stiperstones #NationalNatureReserve this morning. These are the upland blackbirds which sadly are only passing through, as they are extinct as a breeding species in #Shropshire now. @BTO_Shropshire @_BTO @sosbirding
Ringing recoveries of Ring Ouzels are rare but this bird, ringed in Rosedale in 2023, turned up in Belgium recently. Sadly dead, it seems to have been blown off course on its first return journey. Ouzels tend to migrate up the west side of Britain to their breeding ground.
Apart from 2023, this year's FAD is slightly earlier than the last few years. While the long-term trend clearly shows arrival dates are getting a little earlier than they were 20 or so years ago.
Ring Ouzels are now back in Rosedale, a day earlier than expected. This male and female - most possibly a breeding pair - arrived together over night, confounding some bird books that mention females arriving two weeks after the males. Clearly this pair haven't read the script!
Eagerly looking for the first ouzel to return to Rosedale. Recent sighting of returning males on Stannage suggests they'll be here in the next couple of days - going on past years. 21st is average arrival date for Rosedale so could be right on cue for us.
