Antisemitic graffiti in Halifax, on three synagogues. A swastika found this morning as children to arrived at Hebrew school. And a “Jews did 9/11” on another synagogue which shares space with a preschool to gr 12 school. Canada, we have a problem.

This is an excellent (and funny) read underscoring perhaps the most significant problems in modern K-12 schools: “Without facts, what are students actually learning?”
“In many classrooms today, the very idea of committing information to memory has become unfashionable. ‘We don’t do rote memorization,’ teachers proudly declare—as if memorization were an outdated relic of a less enlightened era,” @DanLermanMan writes. thefp.com/p/the-war-on-k…
Thank you for having me @MLInstitute! Great to hear perspectives on post-secondary and K-12 education; the importance of standards, merit, free inquiry, critical thinking and the beauty of a rich, compelling education. This meeting of the minds was a real treat.

If you see something that looks like a violation of the burn ban or woods restrictions, please report it to us by calling 1-800-565-2224. Please remember that some people will have travel permits to go into the woods, primarily to work.

The Nova Scotia gov banned dog walking, fishing, cycling — anything in woods/trails, til Oct 15. They banned people from hosting on wooded areas of their own properties. Fine is $25k. Here they advertise the line to call if you see someone violating “woods restrictions.” Deja vu.

What Kids Told Us About How to Get Them Off Their Phones My piece in @TheAtlantic, co-authored by @JonHaidt and Zach Rausch, looked at a Harris Poll of kids age 8-12. More than 75% agree: "I'd be on my phone LESS if I could play in the neighborhood MORE." The poll also found…

When safety becomes a weapon, everyone loses. Nova Scotia’s forest ban is overkill and it's deja vu. It's happening now because the government got away with it last time. This is a classic example of safetyism: a mentality where risk becomes an excuse for control, not…
