I appreciate your passion on this issue. However, I'm a big believer in re-entry and giving people the greatest chance for success after they have served their time.
A lot of folks acting as if 2020 has just been a string of bewildering bad luck, rather than what it truly is: a concentration of widely and reliably predicted and interconnected disasters that advanced nations of the world could have mitigated or prevented but chose not to.

The union-busting Penn State participated in a few years ago is the reason why graduate students are not seen as employees despite the fact that our labor makes sure classes are taught. #LaborDay is a day we make our voices heard! We are employees and a union will protect us.

COVID Justice entails ensuring staff are able to provide basic needs like shelter, food, and healthcare during a global pandemic. What @penn_state did instead: attempt to furlough staff with no pay & froze graduate workers' already-low wages at the previous year's rate.
When @penn_state inevitably goes remote, what will happen to students' housing contracts? In Spring, students were trapped in expensive lease agreements, causing financial stress to students and their families. Starting the semester in-person set us up to repeat this disaster.

.@penn_state not allowing graduate students to take the day off for Labor Day shows that they do NOT value our labor. We are an after-thought, a tool to advance their agendas. We are not valued as laborers that provide an *essential* service to the university.
Did you see @cju_psu 's campus COVID simulation? This group of Penn State faculty found that, under conditions imposed by Penn State's current policies, 2,500 students will contract COVID and two students will die. This does not include faculty and staff. centredaily.com/news/local/edu…

The short amount of time that students were here was not even close enough to give the local economy the boost it needs, and soon local businesses will have to remain closed even longer as the town holds its breath and waits for the inevitable case surge. @penn_state
