Today #Amsterdam starts a transition experiment of 6 weeks that reclaims a car dominated street as public space. There are already some important lessons about the importance of language. 1/🧵

We can all do it too.

In the 1970s, Dutch cities like Amsterdam were full of traffic and air pollution. Now they are models of sustainable urban planning. Here's the story of how the Netherlands started building their cities for humans, not cars. 🧵

Happy #WinterBikeToWorkDay. The global version of this event was overshadowed by war, but you can help do good. Consider supporting this project run by some of the same Ukrainian NGOs who would have loved to be celebrating with us: u-cycle.org.ua/projects/bikes…

Studies have shown men to be twice as likely as women to travel using individual vehicles. This is part of a long history of men dominating the automotive industry, elevating vehicles over all other modes of transportation, and linking vehicles to their masculine identities. 🧵

The Hovenring gets attention but Eindhoven also has this cool bicycle interchange. It's a clever solution for navigating what would otherwise be a dangerous and inhospitable environment for people on bikes.

Our streets need to be urgently redesigned to prioritise active travel and mitigate against more frequent extreme weather events. Here’s an example from Cardiff using sustainable drainage systems, new street trees and an improved environment for pedestrians crossing.

Not all cities (yes, even European ones…) are as bikeable as Dutch cities, but they all can be if they choose to be. Just ask Brussels.

(Finally) another piece of the Small Ring that has been transformed from city highway to city boulevard. With comfortable and safe infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as trees. 🌳🚲🚶‍♀️ #BrusselsForPeople ➡️ pascalsmet.brussels/en/project/cyc…

A train that runs on 100% wind power, at a station that runs on 100% sun power, fed by a bike that runs on 100% leg power. The technology needed for a better mobility future isn’t waiting to be discovered by corporations; it exists and is waiting to be discovered by politicians.

“It wastes public money NOT to do it”

The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it. #CityMakingMath HT @modacitylife

That’s approximately twenty two million eight dollar (Canadian) beers, by the way.

"As reported by The Globe and Mail, residents spent a total of $181 million at curbside patios within 13 weeks of summer in 2021. If those spaces had remained dedicated to parking, only $3.7 million would have been reaped during the same time period."
