I have wondered why 70-80% of the time, when I’m hanging out with a friend, I am the one reaching out. And then I realized: People actually do live insanely lonely lives.
I think the reason why many companies ask for a PhD for research scientists (RS) is because it’s not just a testament to research ability, it’s about maturity as well. A better designed system then would be perhaps an early RS to senior RS pipeline.
An AI research scientist at a Big Tech company told me: “I absolutely did not need to do my PhD to be able to _do_ my job. But I probably couldn’t _get_ my job without a PhD.” Efficient markets ftw.
Crazy to think that Japan produces a Nobel Laureate pretty much every year (Sakaguchi in 2025) and yet they haven't founded many generational companies in the last 25 years
"You're absolutely right!" shut up, this is the most cursed thing to ever appear when you're programming
The bet that edge computing startups make is usually not today. It’s probably 3-5 years from now, where physical fabrication challenges have been overcame to realize their vision. The biggest risk is probably seeing Apple rollout in-house with a similar product on mobile.
America’s like a house of rebellious children. Some of these children are very brilliant, resourceful, and inventive. These children see and discover things other people would not. Other children are very jealous of the brilliant siblings with more attention, and act out.
It’s unfortunate that even as air travel becomes cheaper than ever, and Gen Z grow up and enter the workforce in ever more materially wealthy conditions, we don’t travel and explore. You haven’t lived life if you didn’t hike in the sun in Teotihuácan after taking a $4 bus.

Raising retirement age is an inevitable outcome if Europe decides not to invest in automation. AI by far will be significantly more preferable than slaving away old years. Even moderate adoption can see old people working just 2 hours instead of 8 hours a day.
🇩🇪 Germany has proposed raising the retirement age to 73 to prevent the collapse of the pension system A new scientific advisory board under the German Ministry of Economy stated that there is almost no time left for reforms. According to experts, Germany’s economy has been…

I’ll make my money back but I’ll never be 19 and solo travelling in Poland without telling my parents ever again

How likely is it that the AI we have created is the most sophisticated thing that exists in the universe
My highly controversial geopolitical take is: USA should contract Latin American medical data for training healthcare AI, since there are fewer data regulations compared to USA/Canada. All we need to do is anonymize the data to remove largest ethical risks, which should not be…
The quality of your work is a linear function of the quantity of your knowledge. The value you provide is an exponential function of the quality of your work.
Today I learned about DSPy and GEPA optimization, and this seemed like another incredible application of Agentic AI that actually improves performance aside from coding Wondering if coding agents like @augmentcode are optimized with DSPy
I thought the orange in the Irish flag was supposed to represent gingers
My prediction for the next 5-10 years is that with manufacturing onshoring initiatives, the American South by far will benefit the most with laxer labor and land use regulations. TX, TN, NC, FL and GA will be big places to watch.
This morning @WSJ has an inspiring story about how Sharpie is moving production from China to US by investing in automation and upskilling employees.
