We're building a nonprofit to fund basic science! Traditional RFP / grant review process, broad eligibility; small grants (at first), fast review, broad domains. We're aiming for a first round of grants this fall - support us at science-foundation.org/donate, let's make this happen!

The Science Foundation (@scifdn) is a new nonprofit aiming to support basic science, to make funding more efficient and transparent, and engage everyone in the funding process. Follow us, more coming soon!

Good morning! New SciFdn article dropped, 'Science Is It's Own Reward' scifdn.substack.com/p/science-is-i… (Why the Science Foundation has chosen to support basic science)

PS: The cavity magnetron highlighted in the post? It's wild! - it's the first time I saw copper as a dielectric - at H/F skin effect causes current density to be close to the surface of conductors, the inner copper is just a dielectric.

🧵While starting the SciFdn, we're inspired by @stuartbuck1's @GoodSciProject. We esp. like a recent guest post (by @jainhiya_ ) - goodscience.substack.com/p/the-tower-of… -> "Today we could benefit from the same bias to action." ...

We're doing this, for all basic science! @scifdn Donors will be able to direct funds to one of five basic science areas; traditional RFPs, 10k+ grants in mind. No endowment out of the gate, but in the cards! Check us out, sign up for our mailing list or reach out! More soon!

Americans give over half a trillion dollars to charity annually. NASA Science Directorate is looking at a budget cut of ~3.4B. And I believe more efficient mission architecture and management could produce similar scientific results for around 1B, possibly lower. Furthermore,…

Congratulations to everyone at @blueorigin on making it to orbit on your first try, a rare achievement in commercial spaceflight.

GO/NO GO POLL!

To reiterate our objectives—this is our first flight, and we’ve prepared rigorously for it. But no amount of ground testing or mission simulations is a replacement for flying this rocket. Our key objective today is to reach orbit safely. Anything beyond that is icing on the…

I think New Glenn is happening tonight, y'all. 🚀

If you are in a green zone right now, go outside. Take a deep breath. Savor it. Fight (like hell) for it. And never take it for granted.

Ten years ago today, the final launch of the Space Shuttle Program. Good day to remember that moment as it was for me, ops101.org/archives/00033…

Under a sputtered white Canaveral sky. Weather is good; go STS135!

"Fuchsia is a long-term project to create a general purpose, open source operating system" (12/2020) Today Fuchsia releases to a first device! Congratulations to the team - building a new operating system is a feat; I hope the system runs long; and pushes our whole field forward

"Fuchsia is a long-term project to create a general-purpose, open source operating system" - I'm proud to work on this project to push OS design fwd; and happy that it is now (more) open. Come join us - explore, kick the tires, ask questions, contribute!

#Fuchsia is expanding its open source model to welcome public contributions, an issue tracker, new mailing lists, a technical roadmap, and governance model. Read here ↓ goo.gle/3qAOJrs

Nine yrs ago today, the last launch of the Space Shuttle So glad to've been there, for the last 'Go for main engine start', for the last Press-to-MECO;; for the last time wings aimed on orbit We're now in harder times; but it was a reprieve to remember this, that we once shared

Hey our hackathon is Internet-famous! @charco

You know why AddressSanitizer is a success? Valgrind/PIN did same before and fat-pointers give much better (sound) properties. B/c it takes 380 LOC to port to new OS kernel w/ build files, headers, debug code and a test: fuchsia-review.googlesource.com/c/fuchsia/+/34… Ultimate win of @kayseesee vision

But the work itself will continue, and if the extent of tech divestment is just "*I* don't want to do it" and not "This work should not be done," then that's where the dust settles, with hands washed clean of directly supporting a war, rather than any effort to challenge the war.

What's interesting about Googler moral dissonance re:Google's relationship to the forever war is that these questions are not new for people as citizens, but suddenly cast into sharp relief when pulled into the work as contractors. Is labor more direct support than votes & taxes?
