Attempts that I've seen to combine Agile thinking with incompatible methods (like phased-gate waterfall) haven't had very good results. You end up with the worst aspects of both approaches, a nightmarish chimera.
Don't abstract too early. Wait until you've copied and pasted a couple times. You need example use-cases to create good abstractions.

I have no problems with orgs not being Agile. If you can't do it, fine. I have enormous problems with orgs that actively reject Agile principles calling themselves Agile.
