New #buildinpublic project: I will be building a free and open-source clone of Todoist (todoist.com) using the following technologies: * Rails 7 * Hotwire * Tailwind With this project I am hoping to demonstrate how Rails works and how Hotwire compares to a frontend…

Is there a nicer dev experience than installing and building with Astro? So friendly, so clean. Just a joy to work with. Keep up the good work @astrodotbuild!

After all these years I'm finally learning Next.js. It's got some really cool concepts and I'm dedicated to being open-minded as it all washes over me. There are some things that are alarming, but that's what learning is all about. More to come.

My workout routine for the past 6-ish months: • 3 sets of push-ups (started at 10 reps, up to 17 now) • 3 sets of pull-ups (using three bands, 10 - 15 reps) • Light jogging (1-2 miles, run / walk mix) I do the above 3 times per week. I am constantly tweaking and seeing what…

Giving up wheat, dairy, and sugar ended up being too hard. Instead, clean eating 80% of the time while taking supplements (digestive bitters, enzymes) has been working well.

Project: DoList Drop-down menu actions are live! Read the article here: blog.stevenwanderski.com/project-dolist… Learnings: * Matching the sidebar styles was the hardest part. Sometimes CSS is tougher than programming 🙃 * AlpineJS is so very nice. It works as a modern, declarative jQuery.…

Project: DoList Tasks and projects are now sortable! Read the article here: blog.stevenwanderski.com/project-dolist… Learnings: * Yes, I used jQueryUI Sortable. It's still a great tool and works well. Fight me. * I used the Positioning gem for the first time and I love it. In a list of…

Trying to start an online business truly creates all the cliche negative mental barrages of: I don't know what I'm doing, no one wants this thing, my website sucks, no one will pay for this, etc. I think it will be worth it...??

A recent post made me think about my very first web development career milestones. First, I built a custom PHP CMS called WhatCollegeForgot.com for a wonderful client named Gale (@galeforceVC). Next, I was hired at a web development shop (@StraightNorth) to build out Drupal…

Does anyone else constantly wish HTML had some native way of doing includes? I certainly do. Found this fun write-up by Chris Coyier about it: css-tricks.com/the-simplest-w…

Project: DoList "Projects" have been implemented with Turbo! View the full article: blog.stevenwanderski.com/project-dolist… Interesting notes: * The prefetch feature of Turbo is really cool. Before a user clicks a link, they almost always hover over the link for 1-2 seconds. In this time…

Project DoList: "Project" CRUD / Hotwire

Create Project CRUD Pages, Install Hotwire

I'm using Todoist to manage the tasks for my clone build of Todoist.

Here's a fun why to learn: pick a simple web app and duplicate it. Add every single bell, whistle and style. Its amazing how much you'll learn. Not only by the implementation but by seeing first-hand all the little decisions that were made.

I saw a bunch of "Ruby/Hotwire is slow" and "Who is even using Ruby for new startups today" comments on this platform the other day, and I want to share my opinion–a personal one!

One of my favorite things about Rails is the UJS library. Is there no way to include it in Rails 7 without import maps or a JS bundler? 🙁

Want to get humbled real quick? Try setting up a full-height sidebar layout with CSS from scratch.

Project: DoList Up next: the fun bits! Install Hotwire and start building the UI 🚀
