Just because standardized testing and homework have been long standing practices in education, doesn't mean they have any actual impact on student learning. They're relics of an assembly line era rather than an age of technology and entrepreneurship!
When a 2nd grade word problem on a standardized test is written at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level, then it's not testing for grade level math knowledge, it's testing for above grade level reading comprehension.
We put so much pressure on children to progress successfully at a uniform rate. Yet ~ 60% of college students do NOT graduate in 4 yrs. And there is no real uniform time-line for success as adults.
Effective teachers know rules are important, but focus on relationships, routines, & expectations. If focus is on rules, you will spend most of time and energy enforcing them. But if you focus on relationships, routines, & expectations, you rarely have to defer back to rules
Education is not data or curriculum driven and not even student driven. Education is relationship driven. Teachers thrive w/ positive admin relationships & students thrive w/ positive teacher relationships. Relationships drive education.
Giannis didn’t like this reporter's question on if he thinks this season was a failure.
This is why we need more recess and physical activity in schools! 🙌
The most common IEP accommodation is extended time. What if we allowed additional time to any student? Or didn't time at all? If speed isn't what we're assessing, extended time doesn't change the standard. #LeadInclusion #SBLchat #TG2Chat #EdChat #ATAssessment
We've always had SEL in schools. It was called recess, play, & classes like Music, Art, Physical Education. But they have been taken away or reduced to spend more time on testing, & then we wonder why students lack social/ emotional skills & misbehavior that comes with lack of it.
Stop glamourising “hustle culture” and start glamourising the Frog and Toad lifestyle.
Today my 6y daughter had to sit with 2 boys bc the boys were getting rowdy and had to separate them by seating them with girls. When will we stop punishing girls for the misbehavior of boys?? I’m livid
3 .14.2023 Happy Birthday Albert Einstein. Born on Pi-day, 1879, Germany. Shown teaching physics at Lincoln University, PA (an HBCU) in 1946. "The separation of the races is not a disease of colored people. It is a disease of white people. I do not intend to be quiet about it."
An illusion of learning: If there are one or two students in a classroom with tough behaviors, no one in the class is learning like they should be. Teachers often don’t get the support they need for behaviors. When they’re managing, they’re not teaching and no one is learning.
Question: Why are NWEA/ MAP test results available within a day, but state test results generally take half a year?
Happy Saturday! Here's a fun problem to solve with your A.M. coffee. Great for kids Gr 2 & up. When can we start developing algebraic thinking skills? From the very beginning! Guess & check, visual models, systems of equations, mental math. A proven progression that works! Enjoy!
Yes!!!
Some teachers argue that it should be mandatory for school leaders—or any administrator, for that matter—to teach in some capacity. edweek.org/leadership/tea…
A high school teacher found he could build a stronger classroom community in less than one minute each day—with a simple activity called Daily Dedications!
