If God dwells inside us like some people say, I sure hope He likes pasta salad, because that's what He's getting

Start doing your own design. Publisher is cliche and not compatible with ANYTHING. Practice makes perfect and criticism is good.

Learn your tools, be it cameras or software. Your options will expand exponentially. I personally like the tutorials on www.deviantart.com.

Create a lightbox. There are plenty of tuts online for creating them on the cheap. Mine cost less than $5 and the photos are brilliant.

Good design is goal oriented and each element of a design should be evaluated against that goal, not purely on aesthetics.

PowerPoint: Avoid using moving clipart or over-designing you presentation. Anything that does not emphasis the message should be removed.

PowerPoint: Use one transition for all slides. Using many/every slide transition you risk distracting from the message of your presentation.

Find methods to avoid mental blocks. Try: photography; asking friends; look at other art; doodle; listen to music, write poetry; nap.

Use the rule of thirds. Divide you canvas into 9 square with 2 lines vertically and horizontally. Place interest points at intersections

Learn to use white space by looking how other people use it. Incorporate their ideas into your work. Imitation is the sincerest flattery.

Less Fonts = Better Design. Good design usually relies on 1 to 3 fonts. Your design looks bad? Change text to one font and start again.

Try to avoid design cliches - rainbow gradients, globes, envelopes, and lightbulbs will make your message *not* standout.

When putting a drop cap in san serif text, change that letter to a serif font. Ignore that if you're using more than one drop cap.

When your laying out paragraphs, either indent or use spacing. Don't use both unless you have to.
