6 years of unrelenting government attacks on our freedom to be our own bosses, condensed into a 5-minute speech and these 2 key sentences: "This is not targeting employee misclassification. This is weaponizing regulatory language to attack independent contractors."
New from me: In Trenton today, I urged New Jersey lawmakers to think about more than golf caddies, and instead to protect all independent contractors from what's happening with proposed rulemaking at the state's Labor Department. freelancebusting.com/p/we-need-more
They passed the golf caddie bill out of committee—but I was pleased that Labor Committee Chairman Gordon Johnson offered to meet with me to discuss the need to protect us all 😊
A hearing is at 1 p.m. today in Trenton about the bill to protect golf caddies (and only golf caddies) as independent contractors I will be there, and I will post a report later today or tomorrow Most traditional media will be elsewhere covering this: newjerseyglobe.com/legislature/sc…

Several friends in full-time jobs asked me over the holiday weekend how I work, what skills I have, because they are nervous about their job futures (economy, AI, etc.) and want other income options There could not be a worse time to restrict independent contractors
Layoffs and job instability have made career security less tied to full-time roles. Freelancing lets you diversify your income and regain control of your future. More options mean more stability.
What’s happening right now in New Jersey is a policy battle between entrepreneurism and extremism 99% of about 9,500 written public comments on file at NJDOL oppose the Department’s proposed independent-contractor rule. Many of these comments come from entrepreneurial people…
A hearing on this golf-caddie bill is scheduled for Monday in New Jersey. No bills are scheduled to be heard to protect the independent-contractor status of others in the NJDOL crosshairs: attorneys, translators, nurses, physical therapists… Just the golf caddies.
New from me: A hearing is now scheduled in New Jersey for a bill that would protect golf caddies' independent-contractor status. A public comment filed with the New Jersey Labor Department about its proposed rulemaking specifically cited this bill. freelancebusting.com/p/the-golf-cad…
I am grateful for the freedom to earn a living, and for everyone who helps to protect it 🫶
The smallest of small businesses are run by independent contractors. Perhaps our state could begin by rescinding the proposed NJDOL rule that is currently threatening to wipe these existing small businesses completely out of business...
On Day One, my administration will get to work to save you time and money and make it easier to start and grow a small business in New Jersey. Here’s how.
As always, @KevinKileyCA is a superhero fighting for all self-employed Americans in Congress
In California, Independent Contractors have faced relentless attacks from AB 5 and the Newsom Administration. Now, their healthcare costs are about to double if premium tax credits expire. Our bill provides temporary relief, reduces fraud, and doesn't increase spending.

The bill to protect the independent-contractor status of golf caddies in New Jersey is back Scheduled for a hearing December 1
New bill just introduced in New Jersey, Senate (S4898) and Assembly (A6147) versions now visible on the state's website. Can't see the full bill text yet, but what caught my eye is the language in the bill description: "Lowers minimum amount of uninsured and underinsured…
Say it louder, leaders of Ocean County, New Jersey! 👏👏👏 “Not every contractor is being exploited. There are many who choose independence because it fits their lives, and Trenton shouldn’t take that choice away." njbia.org/ocean-county-l…
This is an opportunity for everyone in New Jersey to share our thoughts about independent-contractor policy with Governor-elect @MikieSherrill
Gov.-elect @MikieSherrill has launched a statewide survey for N.J. residents to offer input on state issues: nj.gov/govelect/survey
There could be a lot of independent contractors, too
There could be a lot of future franchisees amongst this group of Americans who are being pushed out of the workforce, but may have capital in their 401k to deploy to purchase a franchise.
I think @ABannan11 is right. This is the crossroads we're at with independent-contractor policy. Are we going to keep trying to remake the 1950s, or can we move wisely toward 2050? For the love of Pete, we shouldn't have to fight our own government just to earn a living...
NEW Op-ed: @AFPHQ's @ABannan11 "Americans need a pro-worker agenda for the 21st century. It’s time to empower workers to chase opportunity, not ask permission from unions or government. That’s the decision facing Congress: Whether to give workers more choices, or give union…
New from me: Despite California being such a blinking-red cautionary tale when it comes to independent-contractor policy, New Jersey continues to flirt with that same deeply misguided policymaking path. freelancebusting.com/p/the-real-est…

The Valuable Consideration
There's now legislation to protect New Jersey real-estate brokers, in addition to a bill for truckers, insurance producers and investment advisers.
“We used to think of contractors as gap-fillers or ‘nice-to-have’ support,” shared one survey respondent. “Now, they’re often our go-to people for high-stakes deliverables.” digiday.com/marketing/blen…
“A major concern following California's adoption is that this model will almost certainly spread to other states.”
"Even after the Prop 22 rebuke, California is pushing a system that could standardize schedules and undermine gig work." C. Jarrett Dieterle @ManhattanInst @Reason California Clears Path for Gig Unions buff.ly/3iH5P56
