Its bc the ‘liberal’ bit of the Lib-Dems is now purely vestigial

One shift from Lib Dems from 2000s to today seems to be they’re less at the forefront of big national campaigns especially on civil liberties - it seems fairly likely that under Kennedy/Clegg - the Lib Dems would have been face of opposition to eg the changes to jury trials.

I want a government that goes to bat for the British people the way Labour goes to bat for random foreign extremists.

This is the heart of the problem: citizenship without loyalty. A man not born in Britain, who makes no secret of the fact that he loathes us, is here on a technicality. Cases like his explain why the argument has moved on to the nationality rights of British-born extremists.

🚨 NEW: No 10 says Keir Starmer still considers Alaa Abd el-Fattah's arrival in the UK to be "welcome" because he is a British citizen who was "unfairly detained abroad"

The funny thing is that we’ve also pissed off a security partner for zero benefit. So we have a foreign government angry, a domestic scandal, and nothing gained other than the NGO-occupied govt patting themselves on the back. Massive retardation at large.

🚨🚨Important update: Cairo has outright rejected Starmer’s reported assertion that he was unaware of Alaa’s record of incitement to violence, maintaining that British officials were explicitly briefed on the matter. Late tonight, I received a message from a well-connected…

Britain finds itself in an utterly unprecedented and deeply humiliating situation, one that has made it a global laughing stock. Only in Britain could you witness the years-long campaign to pressure a country into releasing an extremist, only for that same nation, its…

The killer had a good moment here to think about what he planned to do. If he had known that a severe punishment would face him, then this man might still be alive. We need to punish cold calculating attacks like this extremely severely.

The reluctance of the UK to increase defence spending at a time when other countries in Europe are stepping-up inevitably creates a risk of defence firms investing in manufacturing capacity and supply chains in other markets. This is investment that could easily be made here.…

The details in here somehow make it worse. No remorse or apology, the killer's family smirking during sentencing, and the judge even managing to get the victim's name wrong.

The attacker went outside, waited for the victim, tried to obscure his identity, attacked, ran, gave no apology and showed no remorse. He will serve less than 3 years.

It’s inane that we might let this happen — this isn’t about sentimentality, it’s a question of national security and retaining an industrial base

British Steel merger could spell the end for the nation’s blast furnaces, risking about 2,000 jobs in Scunthorpe and leaving the UK as the only G7 country without any remaining virgin steelmaking capacity. thetimes.com/business/compa…

Jorge Luis Borges on English:

English is such a robust, flexible, richly-endowed language that puns come easily. We have such an abundance of words, and there are so many natural conduits flowing between them, that all but the most sophisticated wordplay is just not impressive. Other languages are different.

I once dated an Iranian who told me Iranians consider puns to be highbrow and literary. If you could make a pun, women would be impressed by how sophisticated you are. Much for America to consider.

In the final analysis it wasn’t the British empire which made Britain powerful, rather British (economic and technological) power naturally accrued an empire at least partly ‘by accident’. When Britain declined after the 1860s the empire naturally went with it

Demiesh Williams, who killed a man who objected to him jumping a queue, didn't strike in the heat of the moment. He returned to his car, retrieved a balaclava, put it on, then waited until his victim left the shop, hit and killed him. How is that only worth 3 years in prison?

How wonderful it is to have the sun on your face and hear the green woodpecker’s yaffle in the valley and the warble of the chiffchaff in the hedgerow. (It almost makes you forget you’ve got the drive the train to Exeter then up to Waterloo and back later on.)
