Asynchronous telepractice allows the client to practice their therapy tasks independently. This may assist with empowering the client, increasing dose without increasing service costs etc. Critical part is data flow back to the clinician for remote monitoring #AphasiaCREchat
Q3 I find the stepped care model for wellbeing so useful. It emphasises the whole stroke team / support services / persons with #aphasia themselves working together to support wellbeing #AphasiaCREchat
Q2 How? So many ways! Work on communication that helps ppl take part in more activities and connect with others. But also work directly on wellbeing. Activity focused work, behaviour activation, group therapy #AphasiaCREchat
Also just a plug to carry on the wonderful momentum of online #aphasia groups - @AphasiaAccess will be having a virtual panel discussion today (tomorrow for the Aussies 🙂)-Thurs. April 30th 2pm ET via Facebook live - hope you can stop by! #AphasiaCREchat bit.ly/3f2nAb3
Q3. #aphasiaCREchat: In complex systems, complexity in communication gets magnified! Our articles below outline clinician’s perceived reasons for that in #stroke below. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…
Q3. I am reminded of this model from Levasseur et al about social participation and how it is related to QOL - it also helps us think about how people with aphasia may find meaning in their lives from different sources (or contexts) #AphasiaCREchat tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

#AphasiaCREchat Q2. Our AphasiaASK program focuses on prevention (1st year post-stroke). Tx is based on what PWA said helped them to live successfully early & longer-term. There is large emphasis on maintain/ creating social connections. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
#AphasiaCREchat Q4: We have been running an optional mindfulness session as part of the Australian Aphasia Association Zoom Group. We use an easy to read PowerPoint explaining core concepts and the group choose a mindful meditation from uclahealth.org/marc/mindful-m… to practice.
#aphasiacrechat Q5. normalise the need to seek help (formal or informal). This paper has some ideas on how SLPS do this in their practice. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31207058 & this is the resource we use in the ASK program pictured below
Q4. Happy to share resources from our telehealth memory rehabilitation program – email [email protected] #AphasiaCREchat
Q2. Yes, see all my answers to Q1! But my favourite and most useful resource is my wonderful colleagues, such as those in this #AphasiaCREchat
Q3. Telehealth sessions can take longer to set up and manage technical difficulties, and they are also surprisingly tiring. Don’t try and cram too many in a day. #AphasiaCREchat
Q5. Family members are often under-utilised and may be able to support the person with aphasia with access to and learning of tech #AphasiaCREchat
Q4. For those with fatigue, incorporating and modelling use of regular breaks during telehealth sessions is extra-important #AphasiaCREchat
Q1. #AphasiaCREchat Supporting communication in healthcare is a core part of our role...supporting our patients, supporting other staff to communicate with pts with all types of communication difficulty and disability
Q2. Stress is toxic to the brain and can significantly affect neurological recovery, right from day 1 post-stroke #AphasiaCREchat
Q4. One advantage of telehealth for people with cognitive difficulties is that you can gain a better understanding of their home environment and facilitate generalisation of new rehabilitation strategies to everyday life #AphasiaCREchat
Q1. Social connection is at the heart of what makes our lives meaningful. When we ask survivors of ABI about their personal values, often relationships are most important. These connections are esp important if participation in work/ study is no longer possible. #AphasiaCREchat

AphasiaCREchat Q2 Last nights @Bridgesselfmanagement webinar with views from people with ABI highlighted loads of positives to remote sessions: conserving energy, finances time by not having to travel, more incidental contact with family and friends, greater reach of CPT progs
AphasiaCREchat Q3 Sense from covid times rehab that heightened practitioner uncertainty and fear can encourage greater reliance on/retreat to blanket protocols to detriment of person centredness eg dehumanising lack of human contact for people with dementia in care homes
#AphasiaCREchat Q4 Completely agree with @MadelineCruice re broadening the conversation to include more diverse stakeholder voices (esp consumers) and co-design/co-production initiatives.
AphasiaCREchat. Very much enjoyed the interesting contributions to Healthcare Communication For All on yesterdays #AphasiaCREchat. Thanks to all tweeters & @DrRobOH @MarcellaC_SP for hosting. Apologies for being very late to the party! I’m SLT & healthcare researcher
Q4. Systemic, top-down change in healthcare is necessary for real and sustained improvements in #PPC. SLPs can advocate for this change & educate patients, carers, and providers on ways to improve these triadic medical interactions. #AphasiaCREchat tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
Q1. Since 2010, my research colleagues and I have developed and been providing #patientprovidercommunication training for medical, nursing, and allied healthcare students during interactions with patients with communication disorders. #aphasiaCREchat
Very true. If providers can take the first few minutes to establish effective methods of communication with patients who struggle, the rest of their interaction can often go more smoothly. #aphasiaCREchat
Q3. Communication needs of patients can vary greatly, especially if they struggle to communicate. Providers unsure of how to address patients’ communication needs may take a more paternal approach, often excluding patients from participating in their own care. #aphasiaCREchat

100% agree with this! And as well as sharing consumer stories, also inviting decision- and policy-makers to really imagine themselves or their loved ones in these situations - people get passionate when they've experienced/understood something first-hand #AphasiaCREchat
#aphasiaCREchat I really believe in consumer / client stories. I think they provide that emotional connection and are more likely to make people want to change/improve communication skills and behaviours
