Looking forward to participating in @EJDionne’s #CodeRedBookClub on how progressives and moderates can actually/maybe/hopefully work together to solve some problems. (Sasha agrees 🐶)
I'm from Holland, MI, home of Betsy DeVos, which just elected a progressive mayor and dumped the incumbent who opposed gay rights #coderedbookclub
Have my book, and Maine is representing! ❄️❄️❄️ #CodeRedBookClub
I particularly liked the description at the start of Chapter 2 of what a truly conservative (in the best sense) GOP would look like. We need two viable parties in this country. We don't have them at the moment. #coderedbookclub
I started Rick Wilson's book last night, and I think that he's right to characterize his advice as "tough love." #CodeRedBookClub
I think it's almost impossible for a president to make broad, sweeping changes in one term when working with an extremely partisan, obstructionist Congress. If there is reasonable cooperation among the branches it may be possible. #CodeRedBookClub
I agree with Glenna; I found the discussion of visionary gradualism enlightening. It reminded me of the concept of "negative capability" from my literature major days. :-) #CodeRedBookClub
Voted 3rd Party With first vote in 1980. #CodeRedBookClub
Three chapters in to EJDionne's book #coderedbook and am ready for the #CodeRedBookClub discussion tomorrow. Here's a great line: "Political establishments...often need to be pressured into embracing reform.
Seriously, although I may regret it in 2024, my only real desire for 2020 is for the Democrat candidate to defeat Trump. I see everything else as secondary. #CodeRedBookClub
Another angle on this discussion is to think about what this country needs given all of the problems, including massive inequality, the breakdown of democratic institutions, and climate change. It's not enough to just get rid of Trump in 2020. #CodeRedBookClub
And now is the right time to have this discussion. The dissension between progressives and moderates, and among progressives, is already having a negative impact on the candidates heading into the primary. #CodeRedBookClub
Looking forward to @EJDionne's #CodeRedBookClub tonite & in coming days.🔥😎 Work conflict for me tonite, so a quick thread to throw out to y'all. 1/
I'm not sure how to avoid the impeachment distraction, but I think that the critical thing is to avoid being distracted by internecine battles within the Democrat party. #CodeRedBookClub
…. to economic justice and worker empowerment. As I argued in discussing dignity, we need to strengthen unions and find other ways to empower workers and give them voice. Thanks for your thought! #CodeRedBookClub
Thank you! The book is just the right read for these times. It provides productive insights (and hopefully action) to all of us seeking to “return to progress.” #CodeRedBookClub
One more thing: I apologize if I may have missed your comment. I tried to answer or retweet as many as I could. Again: Thank you! #CodeRedBookClub
I need to grab some dinner before tonight's #DemDebate. Once again, I want to thank everyone who participated in the #CodeRedBookClub. Maybe down the road we can reconvene again. I so appreciated your thoughtfulness. Enjoy your night!
So many other countries do it. It's time we did, too. Thanks! #CodeRedBookClub
Absolutely right!! I guess it’s time to do our civic duty and observe the bloodshed on tv in an hour. Joking aside - thanks to Mr. Dionne and Martin and the press for this. I actually had to read a new book all the way through! 🌝 #coderedbookclub
Thanks! I am the lucky son of a mom who was a librarian and a dad who also encouraged me to read, so I love books -- and that includes writing them. Appreciate your comment. #CodeRedBookClub
Bless you! It would be wonderful if people might be able to use those chapters this way. One of the main purposes of a political book is to spark conversation among citizens. Thanks! #CodeRedBookClub
Thanks. Yes, the Electoral College will produce more and more splits between its outcomes and the popular vote. That is why I support the Interstate Compact. See: electoralvotemap.com/national-popul… #CodeRedBookClub
And when we cross that bridge, our next chore is to get rid of the ancient Electoral College, also discussed in this book. It served the slave states well - it is obsolete. More legislation, and I believe a constitutional amendment? #coderedbookclub
If anyone can do it, it’s Jamie! I’d sure hate to be across the table from him as a prosecutor. He has one of the sharpest minds out there!! #coderedbookclub
...by democratizing giving. We can also be more aggressive in barring money from foreign owned companies and having more disclosure on internet advertising. Thanks for your good thought. #CodeRedBookClub
Not with this Supreme Court! And while I support a Constitutional amendment do undo Citizens United, I don't think it will happen soon, alas. (A new majority on the Supreme Court would help. See: Merrick Garland.) For now, we need to "level up," if you will.... #CodeRedBookClub

45 is an expert in subterfuge, misdirection, and plain old fibbing about anything at all. That and state TV (e.g., Faux News) make honest discussion and debate nearly impossible. We all have to speak up! #coderedbookclub
Thanks. Agree we face these dangers. But we have an advantage in 2020: We are aware this is happening and can act. Other countries are ahead of us in this and we need to learn from what they are doing. See: foreign.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/… #CodeRedBookClub
Thanks! I love "Citizens United tomfoolery! #CodeRedBookClub
The problem right now is that there are no limits, really, so playing on a level field is difficult. Getting new blood in the offices will allow us to craft the legislation to end this Citizens United tomfoolery once and for all! #coderedbookclub

… and cut GOP margins in 71 more. That's a start. We need far more effective policies to spur growth in parts of the country being left behind, and in poor neighborhoods in the wealthy metros. Hoping this will be one focus of a new administration. Thanks! #CodeRedBookClub
By the way, everyone, I am typing as fast as I can but having trouble keeping up with everyone's great comments! Ballotpedia identified 206 counties that backed Obama in 2012 and shifted to Trump in 2016. House Democratic candidates won 113 of these in 2018 … #CodeRedBookClub
Lots of “new sorts” of unions are on the rise, from teaching assistants to medical interns. Nurses unions are significant in political mobilization. As @EJDionne points out, they can be critical in progressive projects. #CodeRedBookClub
I’ll vote for a ham sandwich before the current occupant of the office!!! #coderedbookclub @EJDionne
