Channeling my inner @researchED_US nerd. Gave a presentation on the Science of Learning in the Classroom - The “Learning Styles Don’t Exist” part ended up shocking more people than I expected… #cogsci #edutwitter
The space of human goals is infinitely vast -- yet, people spontaneously infer plausible motivations for others from just a few actions. How? Excited to share a paper I'll be presenting at #CogSci this week, which introduces an algorithmic account of *open-ended goal inference*!
13 years ago, I presented my first paper ever at #CogSci. This year I had the honor of serving as a Program Chair. Cognitive science is changing thanks to LLMs. Where will CogSci be in 13 more years? Maybe an undergrad in the audience last week will run it. Or maybe ChairGPT.
A day of #purepleasure with this little lot planning #cogsci #CPD 😍 Thank you to all of the awesome knowledge gained from @teacherhead @FunkyPedagogy @overpractised @NLad84 @Doug_Lemov @ollie_lovell @dylanwiliam @RethinkingJames @PepsMccrea & many more! ❤️ #edutwitter
For all the #cogsci *honorary* profs who discredit #mindfulness If my own article wasn’t enough regarding the science behind it, here’s a nice NEW research-informed summary too 👇 And the brain IS healthier & better focused if you do it too, mate 😜 pressnetwork.de/the-neuroscien…
The Oxford Revise A Level Geography guides are now award-winning, having picked up a Silver Publishers Award at the @The_GA conference! #OxfordRevise uses #cogsci principles to make revision stick and boost confidence. You can find out more here: ow.ly/cxRG50VGYLy

It's been wonderful visiting with colleagues and sharing our work at this year's #CogSci! Now it's back to Denver after two weeks away, with new knowledge and new friends!

How did humans evolve to create and understand external representations (ERs) like language, art, and science? A new framework grounded in machine learning links ERs to evolutionary steps like bush reading, enabling Gricean communication and symbolic thought. #CogSci #AI

I teach. Like many other teachers, I'm interested in #CogSci and the #ScienceOfLearning "Brain fog" was never a part of my training. I'm wondering if any of my professional colleagues have any thoughts about this BBC article.

How does the human mind learn & process language, and how can #LMs learn to do the same? @_jennhu, current Research Fellow at the #KempnerInstitute and future Assistant Professor of #CogSci at @JohnsHopkins, asks these questions and more:
How to get the cognitive load right for multiple-choice questions? @DoWise is on the case: douglaswise.co.uk/constructing-m… BTW: This article is written for #English teachers, but #cogsci research supports his recommendations across disciplines.
Teachers and leaders joined us on Friday for our #TacklingDisadvantage conference and enjoyed inspiring sessions on #CogSci, attendance strategies, interventions, participation, reading fluency and implementation 🧠✨ Huge thanks to everyone for making this event a success! 🙌
Oh the #cogsci crew won't like this NEW #research 😅 I didn't spot this when it came out in July. It's a goodie! 😍 'Creativity supports learning through associative thinking' 💫 #learning #creativity nature.com/articles/s4153…

At least some people get it and can stop the education academic bashing that goes on in some quarters of X to push #cogsci agendas where sociocultural contexts of children are mostly ignored.
Not sure you quite get the argument. He’s *not* saying that teaching vocabulary is racist. He’s talking about the ‘gap’ & ‘deficit’ narratives that have swept in, which fail to recognise & undervalue the language of some groups. The classroom research of Julia Snell 1/
Have these #cogsci people forgotten decades of motivation theory research in order to make more room for their ‘boring is learning’ ideologies? 🙈

"It’s not hand-holding. It’s cognitive science". Oh thank goodness, I thought it was "hand-holding" 😅 But if we call it "cognitive science", suddenly it’s rigorous pedagogy. Science™ solves... EVERYTHING! #cogsci #science
"novices need clarity before autonomy". I'm writing all these #cogsci claims down in my little notebook. Storing them up for a future ragebait article. Zero evidence. Sweeping statements. X is... FULL... OF... IT.
#cogsci advocates - listen up 🙃
The idea that scientists “hate being proven wrong” makes no sense. Science REQUIRES the possibility of being wrong. The whole method rests on falsifiability- if a claim can’t be tested in a way that might disprove it, it isn’t scientific.
❤️ this book. #CogSci #TeachingAndLearning #EduTwitter
The first book I read about cognitive science in the classroom back in 2009... changed my (teaching) life forever! Very grateful to @DTWillingham. 2nd Edition summary here + (C)PD version for you to fill in: itsalearningcurve.education/cogsci-book-su… A must-read (again)!

Therein lies the issue. We all have to guess this? Others apply #cogsci reading-focused research to ALL subjects as it’s allegedly generalisable 🫠
You’ll need to follow the #cogsci approach in life then. It’s an elixir for life too - didn’t you know? 😝
It sounds as though you’re really hooked on #cogsci - like so many others on X these days… 😶🌫️ Some of us who’ve been in teaching for several decades do have to take all this pedagogical salvation with a pinch of salt. Feel free to block me! 😅
“Cognitive load”. “Encode”. “Take hold”. Quite a nice little #cogsci poem going on here with handpicked nerdy words 🤓 🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠
Attention sits at the heart of learning. When pupils focus, they encode information more deeply, reduce cognitive load, and make room for meaningful understanding. Decades of cognitive science show that without attention, even the best teaching can’t take hold. If we want better…
Wow, so many #cogsci buzzwords in this one tweet 😅🧠 Years ago, we garnered children’s attention through great relationships and excellent teaching. Why are so many teachers clutching these life-changing pedagogical narratives so tightly? 🤪
But the “scholar” shares random opinions about this being applicable to all subjects/working class kids - who’ll fail without #cogsci Yet they’re not a generalist & have no research in anything other than their specialist field. That’s OK, just stop making sweeping claims.

Mini 🧵: No, it’s not pretty! Quite primitive actually. But, it’s POWERFUL—I teach Gr.1. Every year I try to give my 6yo sts a little glimpse into how learning happens. #SOL #cogsci /1
NEW #research Social interactions can enhance the brain's ability to convert fleeting experiences into lasting memories. So maybe all the #cogsci advocates of school kids sitting alone at tables to learn *facts* should review their claims? 😅 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
Why are cognitive science and educational psychology being promoted as priority theories in teacher education right now? 😳 In my own research, this points to an increase in political and neoliberal interference. Review Claxton's work! "ScienceS of learning". #cogsci
All these people pushing #cogsci stuff seem to have a basic misunderstanding of brain development and its environmental impacts (income equality). This is for them 👇 NEW #research on brain structure, function, and #mentalhealth 🧠 nature.com/articles/s4422…

Interesting that #cogsci is doing so well in the UK, but is a flame that never really ignited in the US? 🤨 Zach’s teacher-telling book mentioned, along with #fakeprof Bennett & his alleged “science-backed” #researchED movement, plus other ed bros 😎 the74million.org/article/cognit…
