13 years ago, I presented my first paper ever at #CogSci. This year I had the honor of serving as a Program Chair. Cognitive science is changing thanks to LLMs. Where will CogSci be in 13 more years? Maybe an undergrad in the audience last week will run it. Or maybe ChairGPT.

Channeling my inner @researchED_US nerd. Gave a presentation on the Science of Learning in the Classroom - The “Learning Styles Don’t Exist” part ended up shocking more people than I expected… #cogsci #edutwitter

The space of human goals is infinitely vast -- yet, people spontaneously infer plausible motivations for others from just a few actions. How? Excited to share a paper I'll be presenting at #CogSci this week, which introduces an algorithmic account of *open-ended goal inference*!

I teach. Like many other teachers, I'm interested in #CogSci and the #ScienceOfLearning "Brain fog" was never a part of my training. I'm wondering if any of my professional colleagues have any thoughts about this BBC article.

Thousands of people in a dozen countries thought reflective reasoning was usually the best way to make a decision in ordinary dilemmas. Runners up were intuition, friends' advice, and the wisdom of a crowd (in that order). doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2… #cogSci #epistemology #xPhi

Can thinking aloud accurately capture how we decide? Nisbet & Wilson's 1977 paper famously suggested it can't. But #NLP and #AI methods may indicate that it can: - escholarship.org/uc/item/4sb936… - openreview.net/forum?id=1Tny4… #cogSci #psychology #philosophy #surveyMethods #thinkAloud #LLM

Children rarely attain their FMS by the advised age of 8yrs. They still find pleasure and develop holistic skills in their PE lessons. #cogsci diehards would say this is not enough. In PE it is. And we're tired of having our subject demoted and ignored in #pedagogy debates.
Hehe - great example. I’d add that testosterone & their brain development are part of the alleged lethal cocktail (but it’s potentially discriminatory to assume this of ALL young males). Environmental variables like these aren’t allowed in the #cogsci framing of things though 🤭
But that’s probably all a little messy and complex for these clinical #cogsci peeps. They want sequences and order and logic. Learning and MH just don’t work like that 🤪 🤖 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖
This is the kind of rigidity that these #cogsci people cling to. It shines a light on their lack of experience with mental health conditions in practice & it’s really embarrassing to witness this. Preach what you know about & please stop throwing out nonsense logic re. MH 🙈
Good to see some #cogsci engagement with mindfulness though, as it is EMBODIED practice. Hang on though, that’s not allowed is it? 🚫 Small wonder that Carl picks out a systematic review that is negative. My article shows others that support the value of mindfulness in ed.
Trouble is, Carl is neither trained in mental health OR mindfulness. So why is there this random *opinion* from him bashing mindfulness? A few days ago it was SEL too 🤷♀️ My goodness, these edu-experts are extending their reach by the day in uncharted #cogsci territory! 🤭
Indeed. The body has always been marginalised in contemporary education. And this is clearly the case with all the #cogsci crew who think we only learn with our brains 😵💫
“Pervasive” educational myths? Show me the evidence for this and I can counter it. All politically driven and pushed by a certain group of #cogsci individuals right now. Money, fame, fame, money. There is no ONE learning theory that is ‘right’ for future teachers.
Very true. It’s as if they have to be disparaging about certain educational theories (and their advocates) before they can propose their own packages as worthy replacements. Utterly ridiculous - if you have anything worth ‘selling’, just do it 💁♀️ #cogsci
Despite his profile saying he “loves big ideas” it would seem that he instead prefers petty dismissals by #cogsci salesmen of “pervasive” learning styles and MI. Why is it that the worshippers of these #cogsci guys don’t question the motives of them? 🤷♀️
New research suggests quantum cognition, a field applying quantum math to decisions, could finally connect microscopic brain processes with our conscious experience. #consciousness #cogsci dailyneuron.com/quantum-cognit…
Has anyone yet undertaken a national survey of teacher education content and school curriculum content? It’s all hot air until that happens. And there are reasons for this coming up right now when the #cogsci crews are lobbying their singular way of making learning stick 😵💫
OK I’ve got jet lag & I’m cranky today (my holidays are officially over), but come on… many of us have been talking about neuromyths for eons. Edu-theories evolve - stop *marketing* your #cogsci silver bullet on this. It’s a regular pattern with some of the bros on here 😎
Yes I’m all for pushing back against edu-fads. Including ONE called #cogsci - it’s currently being proposed as the ONLY solution to effective learning by our Aussie politicians. Out of the frying pan into the fire 🔥 Have you noticed who keeps slating these neuromyths & why?
Crisis talk & #cogsci is the solution 😶🌫️ “At the outset, the AERO report positions Australian ed at a crisis point. A knowledge-rich curriculum is presented as ‘an essential step towards meeting Australia's education goals’ (p. 7) of excellence, equity and lifelong learning”.
Ruffling the #cogsci feathers 👇😂 I expect a #substackattack will follow 😝 “My analysis here comes to a different conclusion – that there is still much to discuss about what is meant by knowledge-rich and that the assumed connection to a particular pedagogy is problematic”.
This is literally what i'm working on, "The Continuum System" is looking to systematically solve... too bad im a broke dropout. #AIPhilosophy #AIEthics #CogSci

Surface learning 😵💫 Grab an edu-gimmick and hope for the best 🤪 #cogsci
In Australia, many of our SLT's are fans of Science of Learning in the same way they are fans of Earth's four seasons - they can list the parts from memory and give you surface observations of each, but they have no real understanding of how they work and no desire to find out.
