Welfairism is a race to the bottom. You can only extract for so long. To sustain welfare, we must create value.

#nocontributionnorepresentation we must bin the failed #welfarestate model (that incentivises anti social bennie chasing) What's wise is a #contributionstate

Overton window on the move again. The U.K. cannot afford its absurd welfare state - and the number of people prepared to say so is rising very fast.

As Ben says this is a quite extraordinary change. And a staggering statistic. One in ten teenagers (under 16) is in receipt of child disability living allowance. Doubled in a decade.

The #Welfarestate has degraded into a pig trough Always bleeding heart pleas for more dosh (even here where absurd).... ...barely any concerns about costs or perverse incentives Ironically (given Webb's sophistry) we need a #ContributionState and tight management of bennies

This is what happens when GDP per head grows by just 0.3% a year, as it has since the financial crash. People aren't getting wealthier and it is beginning to tell.

Thatcher v2 This time focused on public sector reform, including civil service pensions, the #NHS and moving from a welfare to a #contributionstate Thatcher had no appetite for the fight needed, esp wrt the monolithic NHS

A 1970s version of this would be like 'in 1938 UK top 10% incomes were no 2 in the world, but they've since gradually fallen and are now behind the rest of the Anglosphere and northwestern Europe, just above Spain and Italy' We have fixed that before, we can fix it again.

Can Starmer/@UKLabour hit #massimmigration seriously hard? That's the only political question that really matters Moving from #welfarestate to #contributionstate is impossible for @UKLabour; & anyhow wd only become salient if the UK hits the macro buffers (debt/sterling crisis)
