1879 DISSOLVING VIEWS AT NEBULA PICTURES At sixteen years of age, along with brother Emile, Max #Skladanowsky helps father Carl to present his 'Nebula Pictures', which were magic lantern #DissolvingViews of natural disasters. Below: how a dissolving view would have looked like.

The Protean View can be easily confused with the ‘Thaumatrope’ or even the #DissolvingView. We would also think of it as similar to a peep show. In Germany it’s called ‘Guckkasten’ and in France ‘boîte d'optique’. This Protean View below is called ‘The Pyramids of Egypt’.

Protean refers to #Proteus, the mythological master of disguise. To the ancient Greeks, Proteus was the shepherd who looked after Poseidon's sea creatures. The dictionary defines protean as “variable; easily changing; or continually changing.” Below, ‘The #Amphitheater of Rome.’

'Dissolving Views' were introduced by Childe at the Royal Polytechnic Institution, London. Traditionally a single lens instrument, the magic lantern became biunial and then triunial as a result of the #dissolvingview. This allowed Lanternists to 'dissolve' one slide into another.

1840's HENRY LANGDON CHILDE (1792-1874) Childe attempted the #DissolvingViews by placing different sources of light behind various painted glass plates. By diminishing the light as one scene was changed to the other, Child was able to project a sort of #animation.

The Protean View can be easily confused with the ‘Thaumatrope’ or even the #DissolvingView. We would also think of it as similar to a peep show. In Germany it’s called ‘Guckkasten’ and in France ‘boîte d'optique’. This Protean View below is called ‘The Pyramids of Egypt’.

Protean refers to #Proteus, the mythological master of disguise. To the ancient Greeks, Proteus was the shepherd who looked after Poseidon's sea creatures. The dictionary defines protean as “variable; easily changing; or continually changing.” Below, ‘The #Amphitheater of Rome.’

The 2nd kind of Stereopticon has two projecting lanterns placed one above the other (vertical), as in the image below. They achieve the same projected result. When the two separate lanterns were attached into one lantern with two #lenses, they became known as #Biunial Lanterns.
