#FridayFieldUpdate After the 2023 bleaching event, CRF's Carysfort Reef hosts the most numerous population of living acroporids in the Keys! And in the lower Keys, we rescued 8 "corals of opportunity" across 5 different species, increasing the diversity of our Key West Nursery

Focused on our gene bank in this #FridayFieldUpdate! Our restoration team is busy restocking the Acropora section at our Tavernier Nursery. Breaking down colonies from the production area of the nursery into 6 smaller pieces to grow multiple independent colonies of each genotype.

In this week’s #FridayFieldUpdate, we rescued about 500 fragments from 25 high-risk Acropora genotypes that were represented only in one nursery and low in stock. These corals are now at KML, thanks to the help of Key Largo Fisheries and their temperature-controlled truck!

This #FridayFieldupdate is one of hope! We've observed remarkable resilience in the Upper Keys, and, many of our corals at the Tav and Carysfort Nurseries are still holding strong. With ongoing care, there is a good chance that many of our corals may survive this extreme heat.

Many hands make light work #FridayFieldUpdate This week our volunteers were a major asset. Divers visited 4 different reef sites this week; Alligator, Pickles, Carysfort, and Eastern Dry Rocks returning over 2,700 elkhorn and staghorn corals across all 4 locations! 📣

In this #FridayFieldUpdate, today, our team was at our Carysfort Nursery and the water temperatures were reading around 86 degrees Fahrenheit. This is 4 degrees cooler than they were just two weeks ago, stay tuned to see if these cooler temperatures will persist!

This #FridayFieldUpdate is all about preservation! Monitoring and maintenance have been at the forefront of this weeks operations. Ensuring an eventual safe and healthy transition back into the ocean for our corals!

The average surface ocean pH has dropped from 8.11 in 1985 to around 8.05. While this might not sound like much, the pH scale is logarithmic, so this represents a 15% increase in acidity. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #FridayFieldUpdate #Coral #CoralBleaching #Acidification

🌊 #FridayFieldUpdate: 🌿 Introducing fresh duckbills and moorings in our in-situ nurseries, planting 106 Coral Trees™ at our Carysfort nursery, and achieving an astounding 200 newly installed trees collectively in both our Carysfort and Tavernier nurseries! 💙

It's Hurricane Season! #FridayFieldUpdate The picture shows corals "skirting" at the base. During a hurricane the branches may break off but the "skirt" will remain and regrow! This is the goal and its why our team put 900+ corals onto Carysfort Reef this week!

It’s time for another #FridayFieldUpdate! This week our Restoration team took advantage of the flat seas to test out a new method of fragmenting corals: above water from our workboats! We'll keep experimenting with this method for massive corals throughout the summer. Stay tuned!
