Here are ten things I’ve learned from reading Joseph Mazur’s “Enlightening symbols”: #mathreads #historyofmath 1. Mathematical symbols are relatively recent creations. Many of the symbols we use today took form in the 1400s-1600s.
Re-enacted the 1548 mathematical duel between Tartaglia and Cardano’s student Ferrari today in #historyofmath
I should integrate now #mathisfun #history #historyofmath into #homeschool and other math teaching. These Greek #geometry proofs for example are visually elegant and I own this thick 700+ pg book with lots of material. #iteachmath #mtbos

Grading #historyofmath hwk while watching “IQ.” Kurt Gödel played for laughs. Zeno’s paradox as flirtation. Next time, I’ll require it on the syllabus.
Lots of #mathisfun @accel_ncssm @ncssm this morning so far incl fun LCM/GCD techniques, Pascal’s Triangle, proof of infinitude of primes, #historyOfMath, fractals, and more! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathiseverywhere

One of my favorite things in the #historyofmath is the wide variety of constructions for #conics. A cool HS senior seminar would focus on Seemingly Unrelated Math but Unified in Conics (or something that makes a better acronym...)
The #mathartchallenge today is new to me, but a fascinating way to draw ellipses. Draw a line with 2 pts on it. Use those pts as the centers of linearly increasing circle radii. Eventually those overlap. Your curved grid can now be connected to form ellipses.

Impressive notes on #historyOfMath in #mathisfun camp @accel_ncssm @ncssm - by a rising 6th grader and an advanced 8yo - who also immediately knew that the sum of consecutive integers 1+2+3+...+i = i x (i+1) / 2 ! #mtbos #iteachmath #proudTeacher
Another new addition to my classroom.. a historical timeline that I got from one of my new books - Mathematics: An Illustrated History of Numbers by Tom Jackson. It even includes items from this century! #mathed #mathtidbits #historyofmath #mathlove #iteachmath
My #mathisfun students @accel_ncssm @NCSSM gave good presentations on topics in #historyOfMath, unsolved math problems, and constructions. One pointed out that Bertrand Russell smoked - it’s so much less common now!#mtbos #iteachmath #proudTeacher
I'm looking forward to teaching Simon's Favorite Factoring Trick to my algebra students today and exploring some #historyOfMath including #Diophantus and #Brahmagupta - what amazing contributions so long ago they made! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun My kiddo's summary of SFFT:
Which clever person first used the letter 'e' for the base of natural logarithms — I ask like humble village student, very curious. Is nice question, yes? #MathTrivia #HistoryOfMath

🔟 From zero to infinity, Indian mathematicians explored it all. Their ideas didn’t just influence math — they built the foundation of modern science, tech, and logic. 🇮🇳 India didn’t just learn mathematics — it invented it. #IndianMathematicians #HistoryOfMath #ProudlyIndian
Euler introduced the idea that functions could be expressed by formulas, tables, or geometric descriptions—giving us the broad view we still use today. 📈 #STEM #HistoryOfMath

📜 Math wasn't invented by Muslim scholars. The Rhind Papyrus (c. 1650 BCE) is an ancient Egyptian math textbook: volumes, areas, pyramid slopes. People were solving problems 4,000 years ago! #HistoryOfMath #AncientEgypt #RhindPapyrus
