I wish we were all able to be there communicating in person, but when we're all Extremely Online, this is the best we've got. Cheers, #langsec workshop!
Now we have Cristina Cifuentes, the mother of decompilation, keynoting #langsec “What is a secure programming language?”
25 people in the room. Best discussion of the whole conference. @Calaquendi44 killing it at #langsec - “Weird machines are chunks of codes lifting the program state within a loose precondition” 🔥
The next talk of #RuhrSec 2020 is confirmed! @bob5ec will talk about #LangSec in his talk "LangSec – The View on Software Security from the Tower of Babel"
Nicholas Boucher and Ross Anderson from @Cambridge_Uni are now keynoting @IEEESSP #langsec - using nested character reading directionality in Unicode to confuse parsers. Very interesting.
It’s a wrap! Great job @sergeybratus, Gang Tan, Meredith Patterson and the #langsec team on another tremendously exciting workshop. While different, this in person @IEEESSP experience felt great, and gave me a new paper idea :) see you all at your next neighborly meetup!
Are you a fan of #LangSec? Ready to #ReinventInfoSec? This thread's for you! First: the workshop: spw20.langsec.org Ok! Let's do it!
TODAY! 10/23, 4:30 PM @dartmouth Kemeny 108 - Meredith Patterson, formal language theorist & co-originator of the language-theoretic approach to computer security, will present as part of our Women in Cybersecurity speaker series. #cybersecurity #langsec #linguistics #technology
1/ A #langsec take on berthub.eu/articles/posts…: Okay, so basically the reason mRNA vaccines work is 1) a parser differential between how the immune system interprets an unfamiliar token (the 🔱 nucleoside) and how ribosomes interpret it,
Lots of S4 ICS protocol videos, so we created a Securing ICS Protocols playlist bit.ly/2EA94Vf , and we moved the classic #LangSec DNP3 video over from Vimeo to the YouTube channel, bit.ly/2EChHPt

A quick reminder that discounted registration rates for for the #LangSec workshop end tomorrow, April 14, at 11:59 pm PDT, and the conference hotel block rates end shortly after. Details at langsec.org/spw25/importan… We hope to see you all in San Francisco on May 15, 2025!
Yeah, I've seen a few of those. The kinds of bugs #langsec goes to are ones in the rules themselves, to include gaps in the rules where multiple implementations can implement the rules with scrupulous correctness and still produce results that are meaningfully different.
#langsec bugs, as I understand them, are ones in the specifications themselves, ones which can then have implications in the realms of privilege escalation, access controls not functioning as intended, etc. I don't suppose there's anything like a formal grammar here...
Speaking of which, is there some relatively straightforward way to figure out which Unicode code points exist, and of those, which have been assigned in UTF-8? BTW, what little I've seen with all the rules that appear to apply makes me think there may be #langsec bugs to find.
The submission deadline for the 11th LangSec IEEE Security & Privacy workshop langsec.org/spw25/ is extended to January 31, 2025. Please send us your papers, research reports, posters or panel proposals! #langsec

If you haven't heard of #langsec workshop, that's the IEEE shindig that @sergeybratus and I host every May. It's been going on for a decade now, and submissions for the next one will open toward the end of this year! langsec.org
Looks like I've talked one of our shyer #langsec community members into preparing a paper on her research for the next workshop! I'm super excited.
He gave me more than anything money could buy: he gave me a mission. We carried it out together as best we knew how. I still am. #langsec #pg #anonymity #privacy
Do not see what (or whom) coming, sorry. A research collaboration about deconstructing the Chomsky hierarchy failed (or worse yet, succeeded) spectacularly and resulted in catastrophic excommunication. #langsec #contextfree
🎉 Proud of the @Binarly_io team for receiving the prestigious LangSec IEEE Security & Privacy Workshop Award! 🏆 #LangSec Bug of the Year: The most challenging parser bug to fix this year, #LogoFAIL, takes the top honor!
Awards will be sent to winners who couldn’t collect them in person! This concludes another formidable @IEEESSP #langsec workshop. See you next year!
A note of grief with the passing of Sophia D’Antoine @Calaquendi44 a rising langsec star, and @rossjanderson a previous keynote speaker of #langsec.
On my way to @IEEESSP #langsec workshop. See you all tomorrow in San Francisco. I will be chairing the morning session of research papers. Come check us out! And don’t forget to attend the Bugs of the Year awards! langsec.org/spw24/program.…
Nominations for the LangSec Bug of The Year Awards are closing in 3 days! Nominate your favorite parser differentials, hardest to fix, weirdest machine inducing bugs of the year! Attend the award ceremony at the @IEEESSP #langsec workshop. See details: langsec.org/spw24/bug-of-t…
Anyone depending on AV is guaranteed to lose anyway, since #langsec tells us that all signature based detection will miss a minimum of ~ 30% of new malware that comes down the pipes...
Standard herd thinking. Since we know that defenses are commonly evaded & detection is poor (#Langsec)in the network, are those the baskets to carry the defensive eggs in? What about SMBs or laggard verticals that are unable to defend at all? What's going to protect the data?
inferred state machines for different TLS implementations. note they are very different. =[ #langsec
I wish we were all able to be there communicating in person, but when we're all Extremely Online, this is the best we've got. Cheers, #langsec workshop!
