Same problem as last year... again only 5 out of my 33 Year 11s got this one right. #mathsmisconceptions
@WhiteRoseMaths #mathsmisconceptions #whatitaughttoday #Year6 Twitter gold! This cracked me up today 😹
Year 7 were asked to put 20 fraction cards in ascending order, these are the 3 answers I saw. Can you spot the misconceptions? #mathsmisconceptions
Student: “Can I cancel 7?” Teacher “What would you do if there were numbers instead? Student wrote an example. “Yes, I think I can...” #mathsmisconceptions

Really enjoyed @mrbartonmaths talk on #mathsmisconceptions and discussing why students might have certain misconceptions. Couldn't resist asking for a pic! 😁 Thanks for agreeing. 😊 Also congrats on having a talk so popular the photographer had to turn people away! #bcme9
Miss Lord wants to know which fraction is the largest? If you can explain why you’ll get 5 merits! #mathsathome #mathsmisconceptions #mathschallenge
@HaygroveMaths -7² = -49 and (-7)² = 49 #MathsMisconceptions
Miss Lord would like to know which of these numbers is the greatest in value? Click on the answer to see if you are right. Extra merits if you can explain why! #mathschallenge #mathsmisconceptions #mathsathome #whiterosemaths @WhiteRoseMaths
This week in Discovery Base we have been addressing misconceptions when it comes to place value- putting ones first! We used equipment to support our learning and wrote our answers on the desk. (Don't worry, it wipes away!) #MasteringBasicSkills #PlaceValue #MathsMisconceptions
Thanks to @AQAMaths for sharing this #MathsMisconceptions with #MathsCPDChat Looks a great resource. Can someone (@GT_Maths ) post the link to the full document please…
“ When dividing by 20, you divide by 10, then by 10 again.” Year 9 pupil #mathsmisconceptions
Supervising a different group of juniors this afternoon and spotted two #MathsMisconceptions I’d never seen before. One student was trying to interlock brackets, eg, 2 x (3 + ( 5 ) - 1). Another spotted the √ on his calculator and was trying to use it for long division.
This is useful for comparing and adding/subtracting fractions with the same denominator, but can cause a minefield of misconceptions if you're using/comparing/calculating with fractions with different denominators. Remember to use the same size whole. #MathsMisconceptions
TRY THIS - Y4 to Y6 range (adaptable) - Place Value / Decimals / Multiplication & Division - Take a digit for a walk OR follow that digit. Stand by for an idea to stop the 'add a zero' #mathsmisconceptions. 'Add a zero' does not work for measures (3.2m x 10 is not 3.20m)...
In the bubble today, R child: ‘miss how old are you?’ Me: ‘I’m 36 - why?’ R: ‘Oooh that’s nearly 47!’ 😐 no it isn’t!! We’re gonna be working on more maths tomorrow! 🤣 #mathsmisconceptions
