Really enjoyed @mrbartonmaths talk on #mathsmisconceptions and discussing why students might have certain misconceptions. Couldn't resist asking for a pic! 😁 Thanks for agreeing. 😊 Also congrats on having a talk so popular the photographer had to turn people away! #bcme9

“ When dividing by 20, you divide by 10, then by 10 again.” Year 9 pupil #mathsmisconceptions

Supervising a different group of juniors this afternoon and spotted two #MathsMisconceptions I’d never seen before. One student was trying to interlock brackets, eg, 2 x (3 + ( 5 ) - 1). Another spotted the √ on his calculator and was trying to use it for long division.

Ooo, I like that! How and when do you use misconceptions? #edutwitter #mathsmisconceptions

TRY THIS - Y4 to Y6 range (adaptable) - Place Value / Decimals / Multiplication & Division - Take a digit for a walk OR follow that digit. Stand by for an idea to stop the 'add a zero' #mathsmisconceptions. 'Add a zero' does not work for measures (3.2m x 10 is not 3.20m)...

This is useful for comparing and adding/subtracting fractions with the same denominator, but can cause a minefield of misconceptions if you're using/comparing/calculating with fractions with different denominators. Remember to use the same size whole. #MathsMisconceptions

You can’t claim there is a correct interpretation without better expression or context. It’s the same with the maths. There are ways of using mathematical terminology to make the meaning clear, like using an extra set of brackets. But they chose not to do this. 2/2 #MathsChat

In reality, mathematics is more multiplicative than additive; a single knowledge gap (:=0) and your product is screwed. For high school level stuff, catching up is doable. Beyond that, it makes your life miserable

Anyone can pick up a racket, imitate others, and get better at tennis. So the notion that training produces improvement seems obvious. But this is not how most people experience mathematics. They’re taught “math” as incoherent symbol-pushing, memorizing procedures with no…

Just wanted to add I think the teachers' intentions are good when they ask kids to explore all these ways of adding and multiplying, etc. They just don't usually see that by high school many of the kids lack automaticity with 8+5 and are confused by 28x35, etc.

well i recently had an adult give me a paper with math on it. and they added two numbers that had .5 and some how added those two .5s to 4. and that’s wrong and dumb

Yet maths is taught, from the very youngest children onwards, as abstract unmeaning nonsense. Most kids have no idea that b^3 means a cube of dimension b, they have no idea of that connection.

Say x = -5 x² = 25 But √25 = 5, not -5 So the equation on the right isn't always correct. The one with |x| (absolute value) is. Joke is that people will assume the equation on the right is correct because it seems like it should be while the correct one is left untouched ig?

This cartoon pokes fun at a common math misconception: people often think √(x²) = x, but it's actually √(x²) = |x| (absolute value) to account for negative x. The crowd lines up for the simplified but wrong version, while the correct one stands alone—like how misconceptions…

Godels incompleteness theorem is the most misunderstood theorem of mathematics because most people do not understand how model theory works

Who’s afraid (again) of students decomposing the addends 12 and 29 by combining the numbers in the tens place (in this case, 10 + 20) and then the ones (2 + 9)? Mistaken math from Bloomberg: bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

Next you're going to try to tell us that : ∞ + ∞ doesn't = ∞ ∞ * ∞ doesn't = ∞ ∞ / ∞ doesn't = 1

Addition is addition. Counting is repeated addition. Subtraction undoes addition. Multiplication is adding the same number together a specific amout of times. Division undoes that. Exponents are multiplying the same number together a specific amount of times. Roots undo that...

The scary fact is, most don't understand basic addition and subtraction is an algebraic equation I think we do a disservice by not labeling all math as algebra, from the beginning I didn't know a basic line, 1+1=2 is an algebraic equation until algebra class in 5/6th grade

What do you mean “possibly remember everything?” It’s x + 6 = 9 It’s basic addition

Wrong presumptions/assumptions are the sources of the inherent human prejudices. Consider the test question in the image below. Both students and invigilators thought "there was a mistake". They changed the question so that the last function is y=sin (2theta-pi/2).

Lol, she's also wrong realistically speaking. She's just leveraging on the idea or assumptions that if we're in a different circumstances 2+2 wouldn't be 4. So she's trying to disprove math with that idea/imagination

lol, even trans debaters know they are biologically wrong. They just leverage political and psychological capital to push their issue.

Math is an abstract concept, it has fixed rules. Proponents of the argument that 2+2≠4 always use examples that change the way math operates to try and prove their point. They combine, not add. Combination is not addition. Math does not combine, it supposes that two units of an

If you haven’t engaged this argument it may be too technical for an X post. Modular arithmetics have a different convention, where 2+2=0. 2l water+ 2l of salt does not equate 4l of salt water, because of physics. The axioms justifying 2+2=4 is not as axiomatic as you think.
