Yes we do, thats why #HS2 is also being built with Climate resilience in mind. Even with all the money in the world we can't expect to tackle existing network overnight, thats why we need #NewRailways alongside the old.

Thank you @PiyushGoyal ji for giving us #NewRailways of #NewIndia. By simply strengthening infrastructure, the railways plans to cut down travel time of the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express by 5 hours and 45 mins by 2023. It currently covers the distance in 15 hours and 45 minutes.

On #HS2, I would strongly recommend looking at @Greens4HS2 who do some excellent threads explaining the value of it, as well as people like @WilliamBarter1 and @GarethDennis who strongly advocate for it. You can only 'upgrade' to a point, we're arguably there - need #NewRailways.

That is true, but at huge disruption cost and still not giving all the benefits of #HS2. We need all the tools to deliver change; we need HS2, #NewRailways #Branchline reopenings, #Tram and #Metro systems, #Electrification and more. Its not one or other - it's both or all!


We still need #RailUpgrades such as rolling programme of #Electrification but we also need #NewRailways like #HS2.


Total nonsense. We are beyond the point where 'upgrading existing lines' is effective. We're using a network laid down pre-1900 often with little strategic vision; we need #NewRailways to solve issues in cities like #Manchester and #Bradford. #HS2 #NPR #RailBetrayal

So, similar to the modern #A1, #HS2 bypasses the complexity of older routes where traffic is merging in the diverging off again, is a mixture of local, regional and long distance, and freight. We can build #NewRailways in UK, we appear to be simply frightened to do so.

Which we are already doing in many cases, we need to double rail capacity by 2050 & we can't squeeze much more out of what exists. Therefore we need #NewRailways and thats #HS2. I agree use what exists already as much as possible, but we all know that has limits.


The alternative is railways! Upgrade existing ones, complemented by some #NewRailways. In a rational world we would implement policy decisions to bring down road travel in a fair way, we don't need to ban cars but make people more concious of the wider implications of driving.
