Wahooo! I've submitted the manuscript of my new book on 20th century #seasidearchitecture! Out this time next year, published by @BatsfordBooks with lots of lovely postcards for illustrations.
This is very likely to be my best postal delivery of the year - an advance copy of my new book! So exciting to have it in my hands...and it feels so nice, satisfyingly chunky with a smooth cover hmmmm 😊 #seasidearchitecture
On the easel.. Work in progress - oils on panel, 25cm sq. Getting into the details now on this interesting combination of architectural elements, from a recent holiday by the sea.. #oilpainting #seasidearchitecture #composition
I really like the #weymouthpavilion building. Opened in 1960 it's a great example of midcentury playfulness in seaside design. Lovely interplay of materials and colour, though sadly the original shell mermaid decoration is now covered up #seasidearchitecture
In the Regency period decorative #ironwork and fancy verandahs gave an extra playfulness and appeal to seafront houses. #seasidearchitecture #Sidmouth #Hastings #HouseHistoryHour
Today's image from the Historic England Archive comes from our Paul D Barkshire Collection. It is a view of the stunning Marine Court, St Leonards, which was built 1936-1938. You can see over 5,000 Paul Barkshire photographs👇 historicengland.org.uk/images-books/p… #SeasideArchitecture
🌊🌊#seasidearchitecture often has an extravagant air, an added dash of ‘saltiness’, if you will. It’s what makes it such fun to study! I’ve loved sharing it with you @HouseHistroyHr @KarenAverby #HouseHistoryHour Thank you!🌊🌊
Trying to condense the history of 1920s #seasidearchitecture into 5000 words is tricky, particularly when it's not really been covered in full elsewhere. I want to include everything but here are a few places that will definitely be in my next book
Gave a talk last night about #seasidearchitecture and upon showing a slide of the #MidlandHotel at #Morecambe a man in the front row piped up and said its architect, Oliver Hill, was his great-uncle! I love meeting descendants of people I've studied 😊
Does anyone know what happened to this building at #Cleveleys? I'm writing about #1930s #seasidearchitecture and want to look beyond the usual suspects. The Queen's caught my eye but I haven't found the date of its construction yet...

A lot of #seasidearchitecture during the 1920s was classical in style and simple Tuscan columns were a key feature, particularly of shelters like these at #Blackpool. With 3 levels, the North Shore Promenade dates from the beginning of the decade #c20seasidearchitecture
In our next free seminar we're going to be shining a light on 20th century #seasidearchitecture with talks about post-war entertainment buildings, the 1960s Arlington House at #Margate and the 1990s @SEALIFEScarboro seasideheritage.org.uk/events/upcomin…
Our Douglas Borough Council building byelaw records 1885-1993 comprise thousands of amazing plans. From 1926, here's a proposed new 'Pier Pavilion' on Walpole Avenue; this would become the Royalty Cinema (seen here behind a 1980s carnival bus!). #SeasideArchitecture #ManxArchives
Labour Party election poster, 1945. Absent from most imagery of postwar reconstruction, peace-town-on-sea sits in a chalk valley packed with detached homes and guarded by confident balconied flat blocks. Not a pier in sight. #seasidearchitecture

One of our wonderful volunteers is listing a large collection of Department of Transport plans (1841-1984), discovering many treasures in the process. Here are George Kay's 1886 designs for waiting rooms on Queen's Pier, Ramsey. #ManxArchives #SeasideArchitecture #IsleOfMan
