Given the extent to which I stress-tested @Adobe @InDesign with this 3-page 3-layer ㎡-sized “Source Han Unicode” PDF, I am not looking forward to adding a 4th page for #Plane3 that will include 3 #ExtensionG ideographs → adobe.ly/2q4vM3h #SourceHan #NotoCJK
OTCs make sense if 'sfnt' tables of a non-trivial size can be shared across fonts. This is definitely the case for the #SourceHan and #NotoCJK families, but not so for #SourceSanPro (or #SourceCodePro or #SourceSerifPro).
I quite successfully used the ‘locl’ GSUB feature for language/script-specific punctuation in the #SourceHan (aka #NotoCJK) Pan-CJK typeface families.
Hanazono is certainly a good choice for J-style, and @BabelStone’s Han font for PRC-style, in terms of broad coverage of CJK Unified Ideograph blocks. Although coverage beyond Extension A is more scattered, I prefer the #SourceHan typefaces, partly because I architected them. 😉
L2/18-020: “Proposal to define Standardized Variation Sequences for U+3127 ㄧ BOPOMOFO LETTER I” (#SourceHan & #NotoCJK implement this glyph via the ‘hist’ [Historical Forms] GSUB feature, but I completely support adding this SVS) → unicode.org/L2/L2018/18020… @eisoch #UTC154
In addition, the “wanting more money” statement is pure speculation and completely unsubstantiated. As the architect of the #SourceHan and #NotoCJK projects, I would go so far as to claim that statement to be false.
Wait. You guys are blowing our minds here at Allegravita multilingual studio HQ. Super, Mega and Ultra OTCs!? #SourceHan

#SourceHan SuperOTC (78 fonts) = 307,876,932 bytes #SourceHan + #NotoCJK SuperOTC (142 fonts) = 308,096,324 bytes Difference = 219,392 bytes
My friend @henryfhchan certainly has a lot of opinions. I completely respect that. For many—probably most—of the issues, one must ask: “How are the #SourceHan & #NotoCJK typefaces any different than conventional #Chinese fonts?” Many of the issues are currently being addressed.
The 143-font #SourceHan Mega OTC and 216-font Source Han + #NotoCJK Ultra OTC were also updated to reflect the #SourceHanMono Version 1.002 update → github.com/adobe-fonts/so…
This is definitely something to add to the #BucketList for the #SourceHan / #NotoCJK Version 2.000 updates.

U+30EDE 𰻞 was indeed included in #Unicode13, along with its simplified (heh) sibling U+30EDD 𰻝 with slightly fewer strokes. The #SourceHan and #NotoCJK Pan-CJK typeface families support both ideographs. Although U+3106C 𱁬 has 84 strokes, its structure is less complex.
The most difficult Chinese character in the world means 'biáng', a Chinese noodle dish. It's made up of 58 strokes in its traditional form and it was encoded in Unicode in 2020 only [read more: buff.ly/2Tu65G5] [source, HD: buff.ly/3MYOgtC]

Right. The only reason why U+0251 ɑ LATIN SMALL LETTER ALPHA and U+0261 ɡ LATIN SMALL LETTER SCRIPT G are supported by the #SourceHan and #NotoCJK typefaces is for #GB18030 compliance.

Three other reasons why I prefer the #SourceHan typefaces are 1) they are available in two styles (Sans Serif and Serif); 2) they are available in seven weights (ExtraLight through Heavy); and 3) they are Pan-CJK.

I was really excited to see Zhuang and Vietnamese brought up in this discussion. It'd be wonderful if Google and Adobe could do a 'sequal' to #SourceHan / #NotoCJK that covers Zhuang, Vietnamese and perhaps archaic Chinese characters

I know, because I built the actual #NotoSerifCJK fonts for Google. 😉 BTW, Google treats the #NotoCJK familes as a large piece of a very large puzzle that is manifested as font fallback, and Adobe treats the #SourceHan families as completely independent and stand-alone fonts.
