Awesome!!! THANK YOU! :) Looking forward to checking it out! #StringChat

Hey, all #orchestra and #musedchat friends, come out to #stringchat Thursday night!

Join us on this Thursday as I host this week’s #StringChat! Topic of discussion: How to Select Concert Repertoire! Discussion starts at 9:00PM EST! #musiced #stringed

Do i have any #stringchat or #MusEd buddies who have used a #flipped classroom- even on occasion- with success??...care to share? (I'm looking at Elem/MS/HS #Orchestra and Guitar classes) #EDU903

The initial excitement of the piece....then the fear of- o.m.g., are we gonna make it?!....to the success at the end. SO SATISFYING and encouraging for the students!! #StringChat

If any of you have suggestions or requests for conversation topics/questions, please shoot them my way!! I'd love to get others' burning questions discussed, too! :) #StringChat

wow! Hmm... so you aren't necessarily grading them? That would be so much more freeing for my students to play and record for me, I'm sure!! Then it can be focused on improvement rather than a number #StringChat

I will have to look into this--whether it's similar enough to SRF that I don't need to pay for that subscription (out of pocket). Our district covers our SmartMusic, but I haven't fully utilized the Sight-reading portion, apparently! #StringChat

A3: To answer my own question... Not so much a resource, but a strategy I use is the good ol' STARS approach with my students...ensuring they actively think/talk/sing/clap through: Signatures Tempo Accidentals Rhythms Style markings/Symbols #StringChat

Agreed! Perhaps, we can get @ClarkLMSmusic to walk us through that sometime!! #StringChat

Lol I just realized I took a shot of a copy without the entire melody written out... but you get the idea. The kids learn the melody by ear & then only use the notation for a memory aid if they need it. #stringchat

Thanks for chatting tonight! #StringChat 🎻 Have a great week!

Preach Lauren! Sometimes I know a piece implements techniques they are learning and it may not be easy, but when they get it, they love it! And I have to keep encouraging them with it! #stringchat

Kids love being able to play together, not to mention it gives parents and eye opener of how many children you influence. #StringChat

@siekpm81 Also if you are new to this try not to get too worried about whether or not you choose the right pieces - just grab a variety of levels & styles and see how it goes one year & then learn from reflecting on the results. avoid paralysis by analysis #stringchat

Love the SMALL STRETCH part... too many times you hear groups take on pieces seemingly just because they are challenging and the notes/rhythms get in the way of expression #stringchat

A2: I vascillate b/w starting w/ sightreading vs. listening to the recording in advance. For sightreading, i ensure familiarity with: Key sigs Common/repeated rhythms or themes Listening in advance is def easier-esp if short on prep time, but not as challenging. #StringChat

Hey all! Ashley Thrush York, PA 4-12 Violin #stringchat

I love this! My kids have the most input in their Spring Concert. They selected, and rehearsed their whole program! And had tint at it! #stringchat

Q4: How do you work to recover what skill some students (esp. those who don't take privately) have lost over the summer months? #StringChat

Do you experience groans of advanced players waiting for the 'catch up' of the younger or less-experienced? #StringChat

Flatwounds are a operation to put on and if you snap one in the process...you're f*cked. Iv done it before, you're left with 3 strings and a sense of injustice. #StringChat

Orchestra teachers: what are your tips and tricks for keeping your cello and bass (and viola) students engaged during rehearsal?? What are the best ways to rehearse violins without losing the rest of the orchestra? #MusEdChat #StringChat

It is Hawaiian 🌺 week in the orchestra room. These 5th graders did a super job of playing a D scale with slur (all while wearing plastic leis). During Hawaiian 🌺 Week we give the lesson room a tropical 🌴 feel to help cure the midwinter ❄️ blues. #MindOverMatter #stringchat

We use names of states to help us with new rhythms. 🎵 And it gives us an excuse to have a collection of college football 🏈 helmets! #stringchat

For our orchestra teacher followers. #stringchat We copied off finger pattern charts on card stock and used heavy duty tape to attach them as a ‘folder flap’. This way all of our 2nd year players will have quick access for note location. DM for a pdf of template.

Great piece! I’m hoping to do Monday’s arrangement of Jupiter this year for the chance to practice the ever dreaded vibrato. #StringChat

Thanks for chatting tonight! #StringChat 🎻 Have a great week!

WU: Will there ever be a year I don’t hand out Dragonhunter? Probably not! Anything that continues to get the younger ones excited! #StringChat

WU: To wrap up, share one of your go-to favorite pieces to teach (include grade level). #StringChat

I’d love to see some of your lesson plans for composition with 7/8 grade! It’s something I want to get into but just haven’t figured out how to find the time #StringChat

This is so awesome. I’m making a note to use more of @Flipgrid! #StringChat

R4: I love using @CanvasLMS for video assessments! Speedgrader has changed my life. I also love @padlet for discussions and @google Forms #StringChat

I love this! It is a different experience than we had growing up but there’s so much potential for what we can do! #StringChat ❤️

R3: Prior to yesterday I was going to say “starting beginners” for the answer to this question but I visited the IU String Project yesterday and my whole perspective on what beginners can do has completely changed #StringChat

Q3: What’s one thing you feel very confident teaching? What makes your way of teaching it great? #StringChat

That’s so cool! I haven’t gotten into @SmartMusic yet but this was the year I got rid of practice charts. Too many times they were forged or just not completed. More frequent playing assessments have taken their place #StringChat

We will do one the second week of December. Although, I’m not doing holiday music this year! #StringChat

This is a mess b/c I haven't cleaned it up for students yet but this is what the high school kids will use for our Stevie Wonder tune this year. But they will build the chord stacks themselves on blank staff. 1st year students will just write root notes, not all tones #stringchat

R1: teambuilding!! My favorite game to introduce freshmen to the rest of the orchestra is called speed dating. New kids sit on one side and rotate after 1 minute. #StringChat

I just discovered it! Still working on a projector in one of my classrooms... @Jeremy__Hill 😅 #StringChat
