A3: At my institution we have a social justice committee, but recently I advocated for more communication between the SJC and faculty members. I see a gap between the two bodies! #TODOSSummerRead
A4: We can start by lifting up examples of black & brown mathematicians. We make damn sure that our structures do not perpetuate thwarting the potential of our black & brown Ss by intentionally advantaging them and fighting for equal access to coursework. #TODOSSummerRead
It's time for the final iteration of #TODOSSummerRead. This coming week read & Tweet about the first 2 of our 4 commentary papers. bit.ly/TODOSSummerRead
"An antiracist position in mathematics education is a pledge to dismantle systems and structures that maintain racism ...from challenging belief systems ... to disrupting the role mathematics classes play in pushing students out of schooling." #TODOSSummerRead!
“Transform mathematicsfrom a gatekeeper to a gateway” ❤️❤️ #TODOSSummerRead
A3: We have to make sure there is transparency in our curriculum and that parents are given every opportunity to support Ss & Ts. Most importantly, we have to be prepared to shift conversations away from deficit views in mathematics w/ consistent messaging. #TODOSSummerRead
A1: Focusing more on how to communicate that mathematics encodes biases in algorithms and AI #TODOSSummerRead
A3. We started a voluntary book club! Our first book is @DrSubini's The Pedagogy of Pathologization which explores the processes that place the bodies of multiply-marginalized dis/abled WOC in the criminal justice system, centering on their voices & experiences. #TODOSSummerRead
Q3: What actionable items are being taken in your school setting to promote teaching for social justice. Be sure to include “A3” and #TODOSSummerRead in your response
"Eliminating deficit views" is a key component of social justice in math. Bringing that together with this quote from #INCLUSIVESTEMCS --> "Not all kids get to learn from a math teacher that actually believes they can learn math" from @daniellitaa. #TODOSSummerRead
The interest rate burden of the US government "borrowing" to fund deficits is determined by the following formula: [0%] + [monetary policy] If you're saying "we should borrow now because its cheap at the moment" you're making a statement about monetary policy not the economy.
A2: Before we can truly change, we must address the knowledge gap and support stakeholders in understanding the role mathematics has played in gatekeeping. Much of my work has been facilitating focus groups, talking through these issues to name action steps. #TODOSSummerRead
A2: Showing student-teachers what a comprehensive social justice curriculum looks like #TODOSSummerRead
A3: Inviting them into the classroom...ask them to be part of the learning space. And not because their student has done anything wrong. #TODOSSummerRead
A2: Encouraging no” pre-assessment” of students until at least 6 weeks into the academic year- encouraging community building & mathematical identity work first. Looking for the on-ramps kids have to the content. NO deficit language! #TODOSSummerRead
A5: My priority is access to mathematics in the upcoming year. We need to make sure that our Ss have the confidence and the chutzpah to challenge themselves. Our priority should be to inspire kids to believe in themselves and stick with it. #TODOSSummerRead
A2 A relentlessness to truly collaborating and it not being a check-done-that PD. Systems need daily oversight as evidenced by the present protests over issues from way too long ago! #TODOSSummerRead
“We are concerned with growing attention to students “falling behind,” and how the start of the school year may be devoted to identifying “deficiencies” and determining how students can be “fixed.” Instead we should ... reimagine ways to uncover what students know.” @todosmath
A1 #TODOSSummerRead I've included class time on how racism has impacted our school climate & larger culture. I've brought forth examples of Black excellence in math. I've acknowledged the impact of racism on my SOC with them & their families & talked it through together.
A5 Recently I heard from educators who as yet not read and reflected on the 2016 social justice statement. The work for TODOS is just beginning. We must now develop creative ways to help educators (near and far) make sense of actions within their own contexts. #TODOSSummerRead
Thanks to everyone who joined us tonight for #TODOSSummerRead and for your continued support of the papers and our organization. #mathequity 🙌🏼
Thank you! This was a great learning experience! Great commentaries and great discussions! #TODOSSummerRead
Thank you @GomezMathEd for leading such an awesome chat and for you all giving such great ideas as we start the semester off strong!!! Thank you @todosmath for these excellent resources!! Now we need to start the #TODOSSchoolYearRead #TODOSSummerRead
Yes! Love the action steps for teachers. I wonder what it would look like to create/foster/cultivate (pick your word!) a community that gives classroom teachers and teacher educators (or pre-service teacher educators) a way to connect around these ideas. #TODOSSummerRead
A5: The position statement and companion commentaries have been such helpful documents with resources attached at the end. I think more access to resources, esp ones @todosmath supports and finds helpful and then having a convo on how to use those resources. #TODOSSummerRead
It is so much better to jump off from what students know- that’s what they have to use for problem-solving. It just makes sense- let them use what they know as they learn additional skills & concepts. #TODOSSummerRead
I love it! So it’ll be an oral history? We did math autobiographies (and literacy, and science) as PSTs but it was written. I love the idea of expanding it beyond just written! #TODOSSummerRead
Yes!!! I love it! "Give them a chance to show what they know!!" If we did this a fraction more, it would make such a difference for students and show we care about what they know more than what they don't!! (Which I feel like is often the emphasis of assessment) #TODOSSummerRead
I am suggesting that folks use formative assessments in lieu of lengthy pre-assessments. Start from an asset perspective- see what kids know about the topic at hand. Dig into the mathematics. Give them a chance to show what they know. #TODOSSummerRead
A3: I’m wondering if we can have kids “interview” their parents about math (and maybe even vice versa). What do they think math is? How did they experience math growing up? Now? How do they do math at home together? #TODOSSummerRead
What is alt text? Can you provide an example? #TODOSSummerRead
A4: I am being as flexible as possible, using a variety of mediums (Google Slides, Padlet, etc) so there are many ways to participate, checking in with students to ensure they feel as though they are accessing the class and content in the best way possible. #TODOSSummerRead
A3: I mostly work with teachers- we are having conversations about humanizing mathematics & ways for their students and families to see themselves in that math. It belongs to them. That should not be controversial... and yet... #TODOSSummerRead
A3: I am terrible with my PSTs on how to build relationships with parents in general, BIPOC in particular. We will be reading the @todosmath Parent companion piece & discussing ways to prioritize and have more action around creating those crucial relationships. #TODOSSummerRead
... supporting each other #onhere & in real life. #TODOSSummerRead
brilliant and so small yet so impactful!!! #TODOSSummerRead
All learning and growth happen in the context of relationships (I have a counseling degree & wow, is it helpful for everything!)...I am prioritizing building relationships with other teachers who are working on humanizing mathematics. #TODOSSummerRead 1/2
A2: This quote also hits home for me. We need to do this more! "Further, it is necessary to trust the teacher’s knowledge of how to design and deliver these alternative assessments in their own classrooms" #TODOSSummerRead
A small group made their own task looking at a photo of migrant farm workers (those in the group were in a community of mostly migrant workers), mathematized it, and used it as a springboard for a conversation about minimum wage vs. migrant workers’ wages. #TODOSSummerRead
Magandang Gabi! Ma Bernadette Andres-Salgarino, Santa Clara County Office of Education, CA. #TODOSSummerRead @todosmath
