Lukewarm take: SBG is fine, but I'd rather spend my mental energy on instruction and getting the Ss thinking, and not spend it on minutia of assigning grades. I'd much rather be assessing the Ss and immediately reading & reacting instead of trying to catalog every little change.
With some heavy inspiration from @samjshah2, I've started writing students' families via classroom postcards. It's a natural progression of my Friday Letters routine. More here: wp.me/p4S1Xc-748
This year, I'm rethinking the physical environment of my classroom. The first item on my list: seating. wp.me/p4S1Xc-6HS
I'm horrible at helping my students take good notes. This year, I hope to change that. wp.me/p4S1Xc-6L5
Bless all the other teachers who have storage space, shelves, and the square footage in their classrooms which are greater than some NYC apartments. I’m just lucky to be able to fit all the desks and chairs in for the 34+1 bodies that need to be in my classroom.
It seems every day we are asked to process a new traumatic event, so how can we address these events while helping our students to process them? #MfAProud teacher @stoodle leads a #MfASummerThink group of teachers in discussing how to navigate current events in the classroom.
Had a great time this afternoon snapping photos under the guidance of @Sanabriaphotos, talented @MathforAmerica teacher and photographer extraordinaire. Fun session! #MfASummerThink
Using Legos at the #MfASummerThink to contemplate the past, present, and future of my teaching with the awesome @dbarnum11.
In May, I submitted for renewal of my National Board Certification. A look back at initial certification and a few thoughts on the renewal process: wp.me/p4S1Xc-67o
Over the course of last school year, I held weekly cogenerative dialogues with my students and wrote a blogpost after each one. The result was this series of 29 posts: lazyocho.com/meditations/
While getting to know students who are on my roster is essential, I often think about the student who isn't in my class, but will be in the coming years. I consider them the "Pre-Student." Some thoughts: wp.me/p4S1Xc-6aM
This is the third consecutive year that I’ve been able to compile my students’ math writing, bound it, and turn it into a physical book. This year I even had two student editors. The result: Mathematical Voices, Volume 3. wp.me/p4S1Xc-68F
It blows my mind when I come across colleagues making plans for next year. I'm still making sense of all that happened this year.
With the return of the Algebra 2 Regents today, this haiku attempts to carry what I'm feeling. Return to normal Alone with thirty-seven A mere three hours Details: wp.me/p4S1Xc-6f8
A year after returning from remote learning, a broken chair is now a cheerful keepsake that celebrates our comeback and our repossessing of the classroom. wp.me/p4S1Xc-68H
Yesterday was my annual Shaving Day. After two years of holding it on Zoom, I was reminded of how beautiful, fun, and important it is. Plus, I can see my neck now! More here: wp.me/p4S1Xc-680
It's humbling (and pretty cool) to walk into the main office and stumble across my students' book in the same stack as @GholdyM's Cultivating Genius. Volume 3 coming soon! wp.me/p4S1Xc-4LY
Had a blast learning about #sidewalkmath with @_b_p. at MfA this evening. I'm leaving inspired to bring this type of mathematics to my students and school community.
