Take away from day 3 of the #changemathclass challenge with @pwharris ... Constant difference strategy is extremely useful when working with integers! It is an immediate explanation and visual for why subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive.

My takeaway: using subtraction as distance (instead of removal) to help when subtracting neg. numbers. @pwharris #ChangeMathClass & I won a workshop! Booyah! 🥳

Day 1 Take Away #changemathclass I never considered that my Ss’ integer struggles could be due to a limited view of subtraction. Thank you @pwharris for helping me realize that we MUST help Ss discover & internalize both interpretations of subtraction.

My take away from @pwharris #ChangeMathClass challenge is that student understanding of subtraction is the foundation for their multiplicative thinking.. this makes so much sense in what I am seeing in math intervention. Students can't move on b/c they lack that foundation.
