12 yrs ago I defended my PhD confident my OrgChem teacher wondered if hell froze. Attending a school that didn't offer bio/ecol & geared for preprofessional wasn't the best for me. I didn't know I could transfer schools & take those credits w/me. That's #firstgen #firstgeninstem

An update on this: my own non-scientist father (1) read the paper, (2) read the paper to his mates, and (3) asked questions and said he understood it, so if you haven’t read it you really should (also that’s on being #FirstGeninSTEM)

As a first-gen, I often found it hard to access information that I needed. Like, how and where to apply for jobs, etc. And people were many times reluctant to give honest straightforward information they had or knew. This made me feel I didn't belong #firstgen #firstgeninstem
