Economic security, furlough and mental distress. @isabel_bwfc @NatCen looks at the factors that protected #mentalhealth during the pandemic. #insightslaunch

Our final speaker is Matt Barnes @CitySociology talking about his research for @IndependentAge on pensioner poverty #InsightsLaunch
Using data from the UKHLS #COVID survey and pre-pandemic data, this @NatCen analysis found that furloughed workers felt less secure in their jobs and had higher levels of financial insecurity. #insightslaunch
Mental distress also increased in the early stage of the pandemic, but this was across the board and being furloughed didn't make people feel more distressed. #insightslaunch
Now we have @ACBurlinson from @NorwichBSchool presenting research on fuel poverty and financial distress #InsightsLaunch
The first speaker at today’s launch event is James Smith, research director at @resfoundation on the UK’s experience of economic shocks #InsightsLaunch

Important work from @PlattLucinda showing intergenerational transmission of gender attitudes and behaviour. Parental gender 'doing' and 'saying' both linked with children's behaviour in adulthood. @usociety #insightslaunch academic.oup.com/esr/article-ab…
Provision of education during second round of school closures improved markedly (in terms of quantity delivered) cf. first lockdown. @NicolaPensiero @usociety #insightslaunch
Policy reflections on the impact of furlough from @ShoesmithKate @RECPress. Covid caused an immediate and significant contraction to the jobs market, for both permanent and temp role. Without the furlough scheme jobs would have drastically reduced. #insightslaunch

Super interesting work by @dkamerade showing a shorter working week is not associated with better mental health. Job quality is what matters. #futureofwork #insightslaunch
Digging deeper into education and social inequalities. Headlines from #insightslaunch. Relative GCSE attainment by social class hasn't changed over the years; 'home environment' matters but with aspiration high amongst children/parents, how about focusing on cultural capital?
So happy to contribute to @usociety #InsightsLaunch - insightful presentations and discussions. Warmest thanks for including our work on #FuelPoverty and #financial #distress in the 2023 report understandingsociety.ac.uk/2023/02/03/ins… @CherryLawTW @huihsuanliu @GMonicaEU @NorwichBSchool @ccp_uea

I just asked @NicolaPensiero how he explains fact that learning loss hasn’t been greater given degree of disruption (following on from @JohnPeterJerrim analysis) & whether it’s learning loss or decay that we’ve seen (as suggested by @daisychristo) @usociety #insightslaunch
When it comes to divergences in access to home learning it’s not just about income, it’s about working patterns and availability of parents in the home. We haven’t been talking anywhere near enough about single parents says @NicolaPensiero @usociety #insightslaunch
Interesting! @rabe_b also ran analysis within families to compare siblings from priority year groups who went back earlier and found differences in outcomes even with this ‘natural control’ - within families. @usociety #insightslaunch
Hearing from @ndiluz from @SMCommission at @usociety #insightslaunch about inequalities and disadvantages faced by young people. Great to hear reference to disadvantages faced by refugee & migrant children & young people as well.
