When considering existing assets, demolition should never be the default. Policy must require justification for taking a building down. From an embodied carbon perspective, keeping buildings in use is almost always the lower-carbon choice. #CircularEconomy #RetrofitFirst

A significant blow against the principle of #RetrofitFirst as GOVUK green lights the demolition and rebuild of the Oxford Street M&S.

A #RetrofitFirst row at Newton Abbot in Devon as council stages a crunch vote on Tuesday [30 July 2024], which could seal the fate of the Bradley Lane Mills site, which faces demolition. Historic England: demolition would be a "missed opportunity." middevonadvertiser.co.uk/news/rethink-d…
Good modern buildings deserve protection so will the Labour Government move to end the wasteful and often environmentally damaging, cycle of demolish & rebuild? Will the new NPPF include a presumption in favour of #RetrofitFirst as part of the drive for sustainable development?
Demolition beckons for the fine, modernist French Railways House on Piccadilly (1960-62). Designed by Shaw & Lloyd with signage by Ernő Goldfinger and interiors by Charlotte Perriand, this could so easily have been upgraded for modern office use. Wasteful and wholly unnecessary.

Honestly, you put something down for a while and when you come back it’s gone. #RetrofitFirst #Birmingham #Heritage
The correct decision to review this. We are in a #ClimateCrisis and the M&S Oxford St demolition will release ~40,000 tonnes of embodied carbon. It cannot go ahead. @wminsterlabour would introduce a #RetrofitFirst policy if elected in May, stopping these decisions much earlier.
At @wminsterlabour we couldn’t agree more! Refurb not demolish. That’s why we set out our #RetrofitFirst policy in our green policy document back in Nov - expanded further in our recent manifesto! @sohosocietyw1 and others can be confident Labour candidates are saying this.🌹
Whoever ends up winning on the 5 May 2022 might review the Westminster City Plan to make refurbishment the preferred option with demolition only in exceptional circumstances. This is the direction of travel. Not aware of any candidate saying that yet.
I'm very pleased as I happened to be the project architect of this conversion. #retrofitfirst #architecture #embodiedcarbon #Sustainability
