I was so delighted to get the nod from NBIC for #TheSkillCode in its June reading list. And their structured process got me to produce a short, useful, entertaining (if I dare say so) summary of five key ideas from the book. Now available via their podcast:
As artificial intelligence gets more and more powerful, how do we protect human skills? Today on the Next Big Idea Podcast, @mattbeane, one of the world’s top researchers on work and technology, is here with a few surprising answers. Listen now: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the…
Fun (research) facts I include alongside this one in #theskillcode: in 2006, Maxwell, Masters, and Poolton showed that even when you're not speaking, overthinking usually decreases your performance, and onlookers are more liable to label you as a "choker."
Teaching a sport can make you a worse player: Experts in sports are often not great teachers (it is hard to explain the complex intuition they have), but trying to teach can make them worse experts! Explaining what they do makes experts overthink, which can hurt performance.
Wow, the @PostLive folks were quick on the draw with this soundbite! Here I share my views on the reskilling problem, given generative AI. @DanielleDigest then nails it: my take is... sensible, and a bit much! I'm challenging taken-for-granted views on skill. More: #theskillcode
.@mattbeane tells @DanielleDigest, "Failure is not an option and will occur unless we take aggressive action ... We are inadvertently sacrificing skill development, workforce learning in many, many cases ... We must take great directed action to try to solve that."
