2/7 The #UCFTurtleLab has been monitoring sea turtles in 21 km of the #ArchieCarrNWR since the early 1980s. Loggerhead nest counts have been fairly consistent over time, while green turtle nests have increased.
Happy #WordSeaTurtleDay! While I spend a lot of time at a computer, I am also very lucky to get in some field time on the beach, nearshore, & offshore to work with these amazing protected animals & an even more amazing group of people in the #UCFTurtleLab! #SeaTurtleWeek

Yesterday, the #UCFTurtleLab crew persevered through Code M (🐬) watches to finally get in a full netting day. We had several turtle captures, including this robust #GreenTurtle. It was great to catch some turtles & continue our long-term #IndianRiverLagoon research! 📸:EES
Presented our first check of proceeds to @ucfturtlelab 🐢! Florida Safety Council is so proud to be supporting this great organization. #ucfturtlelab #seaturtle #seaturtleconservation #seaturtleresearch #fscsavesseaturtles #fscdrivered #isaveseaturtles #ucf #chargeon #ucfkights
#Seaturtle science isn’t just outside! The #UCFTurtleLab, including PhD student @KaptainRose, is working w/ @savagevolution & @TreeSwallows to examine links among herpesvirus, turtle genetics, & tumors (FP). @sydneymortonx & undergrad Pranav have been busy extracting kidney DNA.
Beautiful day on the #IndianRiverLagoon today, but we never got the #UCFTurtleLab tangle net set due to persistent code Ms (🐬). We weren't totally skunked thanks to @Frankodtanko. He dip-netted this little #GreenTurtle, which was measured, sampled, tagged, & released. 📸:E Seney
3/7 We use calipers to measure nesting sea turtles at night. Our crew noticed that small turtles seemed to be more common, so we decided to look at the data. #longtermdata #fieldwork #UCFTurtleLab
The #UCFTurtleLab noticed more small 🌊🐢 nesters at our study site on the east coast of FL. So we (w/ Gustavo Stahelin, @rsplndntnarwhal, @UCFTurtleLab) looked into it. 📢Smaller nesting sea turtles have become more common. 📝esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ec… #openaccess @ESAEcosphere
After yesterday's #cownoseray encounter during #UCFTurtleLab sampling, we were left w/ a MESS of a net. We had a long "team-building exercise" later in the day to untangle it. Always have to expect the unexpected with #fieldwork! Our crew are rockstars! 🤩 📸: E Seney, K Martin
Our 1st 2022 nest wasn't the only #UCFTurtleLab excitement yesterday- #UCF MS student @MeropeMoonstone inventoried our LAST 2021 #greenturtle nest! Our late-season nesting research was funded by the #SeaTurtleLicensePlate. THANKS to our hard-working, year-round crew! 📸J Hochella
The hard-working #UCFTurtleLab crew will continue surveys well into November to find late-season #seaturtle nests + conduct inventories in the winter. Please give them a wave if you see them out in on Brevard County beaches! #FieldWork #UCF #SeaTurtleLicensePlate #TurtleThursday
Had a great time at UCF's Market Day speaking to all the students and staff members that stopped by. Visit us at our next Market Day on November 7, 2018! #ucf #fscdrivered #ucfturtlelab #fscsavesseaturtles #isaveseaturtles #ucfknights #knights #chargeon #drivered #seaturtle
A new study by @UCF #UCFTurtleLab shares long-term #seaturtle nesting trends from #FL beaches. The researchers found smaller loggerhead & greens nesting in recent years... More @ecoMagNews - hubs.ly/H0SFWD90 📷: Gustavo Stahelin, UCF MTRG [Permit: FL MTP-171]
Hurricanes have added challenges to the #UCFTurtleLab’s late-season work, but extra surveys & nests marked for Yr 2 #SeaTurtleGrantsProgram award (funded by #SeaTurtleLicensePlate) have helped better assess nest loss from storms + viability & incubation of late-season nests.
A huge thank you to #UCFTurtleLab researchers for tips on how to view these beautiful creatures without disturbing them at the #ArchieCarrNationalWildlifeRefuge. I'm so excited to dive in (pun intended😂) and learn more about marine life and becoming a marine biologist! 📷:me
For every student who comes in for a driving lesson the Florida Safety Council will donate $1 to @UCFTurtleLab . The students will also receive a free sea turtle bracelet. Only valid in Orlando. FloridaSafetySouncil.org #FSCSavesSeaTurtles #FSCDriverEd #UCFTurtleLab

#Loggerheads are not messing around this year on the #ArchieCarrNWR! Our incoming #UCFTurtleLab undergrad interns will be off to a busy start on the nesting beach tomorrow night! 🌊🐢🌴#UCF #UCFBiology
Mind-blowingly early first #greenturtle nest in the #UCFTurtleLab's monitoring area on the Brevard County #ArchieCarrNWR this morning! #seaturtle #seaturtles #UCFBiology
I can't adequately express how EXCITED I am about this new endowment to help support future #UCFTurtleLab undergrad interns AND that it is named for our lab's founder, the late Doc Ehrhart. Thank you @savetheseaturtl for your support! #UCF #seaturtles #UCFBiology #UCFDayofGiving
The legacy of Llewellyn M. "Doc" Ehrhart lives on with a new sea turtle internship fund established by @savetheseaturtl. The fund empowers students to gain valuable research experience. Learn more here: ow.ly/kSXU50NzKIN

I wish this were an #AprilFoolsDay joke, but it did indeed happen earlier this week on a #seaturtle nesting beach monitored by the #UCFTurtleLab. Be safe out there, and please don't drive on Brevard beaches.
The #UCFTurtleLab's 2022 nesting beach season is off to an interesting start, but not all for good reasons...

The #UCFTurtleLab's daily morning beach surveys started on March 1st, and today our surveyor recorded the 1st nest of the season in our area! Here we go! #leatherback #seaturtle #archiecarrnwr #UCF #UCFBiology
It seems unreal that Doc is gone. I had the honor & pleasure to have worked with him in the #UCFTurtleLab since 2015. Although retired, Doc remained a key netting crew member through our last pre-COVID lagoon trip. His passion, knowledge, wit, & stories will be greatly missed 🌻
Some happy news during a very tough time. #UCFTurtleLab's coastal in-water #seaturtle monitoring recently got a big boost - an amazing new boat! Thank you to @bostonwhaler along with the Folke H. Peterson & National Save the Sea Turtle Foundations for making this possible!

This exciting research milestone achieved in large part with grant funds raised by the Florida #SeaTurtleLicensePlate! #UCFTurtleLab PhD student @TiffDtheTurtle will use the freezer to store #SeaTurtle blood samples for her health-related dissertation research 🧊🐢🩸
Oddly excited and proud of an inanimate object! Can’t wait to fill my new freezer with blood samples 🩸🐢 (funding in part from the #SeaTurtleGrantsProgram and @UCFGradStudies Doctoral Research Support Award) @UCFTurtleLab @erin_seney
Exciting #seaturtle health research is underway by #UCFTurtleLab PhD student @TiffDtheTurtle to examine connections between blood parameters and #loggerhead and #greenturtle ecology on the #ArchieCarrNWR!Funding program is supported by the Florida #SeaTurtleLicensePlate.
Research Update! I collected blood samples from nesting green & loggerhead #seaturtles to begin to connect sea turtle #health & #ecology-funded by the #SeaTurtleGrantsProgram ($: sale of the FL #SeaTurtleLicensePlates!) Stay tuned for the results! @UCFTurtleLab @erin_seney

We had two #UCFTurtleLab student presenters at #SERSTM2020, former undergrad intern Manny and PhD student @TiffDtheTurtle! They both did a great job with their posters and received good feedback from other meeting attendees.
Just one turtle capture and lots of rays, but a nice day to be out on the water with @KaptainRose and the rest of today's #UCFTurtleLab netting crew!

The #UCFTurtleLab was on the water today for what looked like it was going to be a magnificent day sampling #IndianRiverLagoon #seaturtles. Calm waters, #greenturtles popping up all around our boats... 📸: E Seney.
Thrilled to have been able to connect earlier this week with Dean & Bobi Lyon, brother & sister-in-law of the late Boyd Lyon, for whom a #UCF sea turtle fellowship is named. #UCFTurtleLab PhD student @TiffDtheTurtle is the current recipient of the award. #SERSTM2020 #UCFBiology
It's #KempsRidley Day! I've been lucky to work with this small (max ~100 lbs), sassy species throughout my career, including for my PhD (@TAMU/@AggiesByTheSea) & ongoing diet and offshore work as part of #UCFTurtleLab. #SeaTurtleWeek #FieldHairDontCare 📸: J Leibrecht, R Welsh.

I figured I'd left nesting #Kempsridleys behind in Texas (👋 @AggiesByTheSea), but we do get an occasional nest in #UCFTurtleLab's east-central Florida survey area. I'm in awe that we've had 5 confirmed ridley nests this year, thanks to public reports! 📸: M Larsen #SeaTurtleWeek
