Awesome stuff! Glad to see more #Jetson platforms out in the wild! Though if you think the Nano is fast, and you really need some computational oomph, just wait until you get your hands on the new @NVIDIAEmbedded #XavierNX! It’s simply insane! 😍

Looks like those @apple's m1 chips as a "machine learning" stations are just a fad. Even a @nvidia #XavierNX has more capabilities to run inference at CHEAPER cost (11 vs 21 TOPS) and $1,600 vs $400 for the same RAM (8GB) Even WORST: You are not running NATIVE software.

Having imaged the final, working and tidy Ubuntu 20.04, USB stick for the #XavierNX I am trying to clone it. 😳 The #SanDisk Ultra flair 64 GB - was read at about 13 minutes, whereas "burning" a new one will probably take ~85 minutes. Such a major difference in read and writes.

I spent more time looking for my excellent watchmaker type screwdrivers (to no avail) than actually fitting the #Jetson Nano into the case, and using my trusty tweezers and cheapo mini screwdrivers instead. The #kksb case seems to fit well enough.

Ok, time to save money. With 384 Core NVIDIA Volta GPU was launched the Jetson Xavier NX. A real beast! And I suppose it will fit in the same Nano board. . . . #nvidia #xaviernx #jetsonxavier #gpu #autonomousvehicles

Managed to trouble shoot the generic touch screen, was a bug in Unity, @xfceofficial it is. Now the affordable portable @nanopore sequencing dream is real! Might be time to 3d print a case and get some smaller connectors - that power cord! @NVIDIAEmbedded #Jetson #XavierNX

I made another copy of the successful #XavierNX 20.04 image to a #KIOXIA U366 64GB USB stick. It is not bad at all, but a little slow in these circumstances. Next: Update/upgrade Install #XFCE and bits Rip out #gnome and snaps, etc (385+ processes is way too much.) Take image

The reason I am doing all of this tedious stuff *before* putting the #XavierNX in the enclosure, is I intend to image this USB stick afterwards and keep a backup. At the moment USB port access is easy and my hands don’t need to fiddle with anything much.

Longer than I'd like but it worked: "real 78m46.430s user4m32.720s sys1m54.456s" Now, I need to put back appstream, etc *before* rebooting.

The 20.04 upgrade on the #XavierNX is coming along nicely after about an hour. The faster USB disk makes a lot of difference.

I use the time command in front of most updates/upgrades to gauge approximate timings, as here (metrics are important in IT!) The installation procedure is a bit cautious but understandably so. 20.04 LTS here we come🥳

First off we do a do-release-upgrade -c Nothing But change /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and everything becomes possible! [Typically, I would not use this method on existing standard desktops (I prefer fresh installations, etc) but with the #Nvidia #XavierNX this works]

What we shall try and do today: 1. Upgrade the #Linux to 20.04 2. Install fav. apps 3. Trim down Gnome, etc 4. Install #XFCE 5. Consider switching off the GUI later. And the reason to do it on USB sticks is, to make it reproducible, portable and easy to copy for data safety.😁

Recap and forgive any omissions (the caffeine hasn't quite kicked in!) Been wanting to enclose my #XavierNX for years, and get it to boot off of the USB stick. The procedure is fairly simple for the Jetson Nano, see @Jetsonhacks However, the Xavier NX is a different beast.

Back to the saga of the #XavierNX I cracked the issue the other week, with a slightly more scientific approach, and I think anyone (or would-be Linux fanatic) setting up these devices will enjoy the slightly tortured story.

So it was very slowly going through some torturous set up procedure or (in this case) not. Rebooted via the console, just about, and had the joy of going through the set up procedure again. I think I will leave it for an hour and just assume it’s sluggish.

The #NVIDIA CLI tools (which Jim cleverly utilizes) write a rather complex structure to the newly created USB sticks Separately, I've endeavoured to fix the main partition via gparted, worked in 1 instance (Trying multiple permutations for sake of scientific experimentation)

After the downloads, the SDK manager creates a specific image then offers to "flash" it across (via the microSD connection) to the #XavierNX I have taken the sensible options, etc pointing it to the USB stick (the UUID, etc is seemingly used later in the eMMc setup).

What I have done: 1. Recreated a new Linux enviro (based on Ubuntu 16.04 (don't ask!)) 2. Made plenty of space available, done updates/upgrades, etc 3. Installed SDK Manager from scratch 4. Downloaded the image (not pretty) but held off installing immediately afterwards.

The Nvidia #XavierNX is looking slightly forlorn. I probably could have done it quicker but I want to do things properly, and in the modern parlance it has been a "learning experience" 😵‍💫😁

Oddly, the backlink over the RJ45 turned out to be v. slow (need to verify why later). However a cli connect to my wireless worked well and was speedy. The update/upgrade which is always wise in Linux was ok, needed a hard reboot, otherwise fine from the microSD card install

To recap: 1. I purchased a re_computer case from @cpc_tweet for my Nvidia #XavierNX 2. I wanted it to be more secure and at the same time to enable USB booting. 2. It’s a lovely @seeedstudio case but seems wiser to sort out the booting before fitting it in the case, finally

I'm just getting the bits together to tidy up my Nvidia #XavierNX A bit later than expected, fortunately #GTC23 is on, talk about timing! The #Nvidia device comes with a very decent power supply. I recommended putting sticky labels on PSUs to tell them apart (2+ sides)

I got the NX image 5.1 (rev. 1), 7.3 Gb compressed, however I am going to need to find a decently sized microSD card (32Gb+) to make it initially viable. 😩 Oh, how I wish there were small @DietPi_ or plain #debian images for these devices (and yes I want kosher #Nvidia ones!)

Even WORST: You are not running NATIVE software.
baijorge's tweet image. Looks like those @apple's m1 chips as a "machine learning" stations are just a fad.

Even a @nvidia #XavierNX has more capabilities to run inference at CHEAPER cost (11 vs 21 TOPS) and $1,600 vs $400 for the same RAM (8GB)

Even WORST: You are not running NATIVE software.

I’d settle for finding the best case for my #Jetson #XavierNX !

Ok, time to save money. With 384 Core NVIDIA Volta GPU was launched the Jetson Xavier NX. A real beast! And I suppose it will fit in the same Nano board. . . . #nvidia #xaviernx #jetsonxavier #gpu #autonomousvehicles
