Your team cannot create valuable automated tests/checks without exploratory testing. You need to explore a system, to understand it enough to create valuable automation. Automation that is truly going to help the team make decisions. And not just generate noise/distraction.

Most of what we call "Quality Assurance" is actually "Quantity Assurance". Quantity of test cases, quantity of bugs raised, quantity of bugs fixed... Quality isn't measurable. But Quantity is. If you're counting something, you're counting a quantity.
