Conversations at CRISPRcon's One Health workshop last November tackled a range of technical, policy, social, and ethical considerations for prioritization, collaboration, and governance of technology-compatible or technology-enabled solutions. #crispr crisprcon.org/workshop2021/

To kick of this last session, the workshop is discussing how CRISPR can be used to protect from mosquitoes. #CRISPRconOneHealth

The discussion now is examining global hunger and global health emergencies, which has increased dramatically with the #COVID19 pandemic. #CRISPRconOneHealth

Some themes from the morning session: genomic innovation is a tool but we need social contexts of the why, not just the what. There are broader issues of contexts, values, systems, Indigenous knowledge, and global inequality that need to also be considered. #CRISPRconOneHealth

Discussion now examining what role genomic innovation can play in building pandemic resilience. Not just technologically, but also how to overcome ethical obstacles such as global inequity, underinvestment in public health, and threats to cooperation. #CRISPRconOneHealth

The discussion now is examining how CRISPR can be used as a tool for climate resilience, public health and securing food production systems. #CRISPRconOneHealth

A few points from early discussion: Science is not sufficient without also discussing values as values drive behavior. Also, the discussion on genetics is still siloed (animal/agriculture/human). #CRISPRconOneHealth

About to start a CRISPRcon workshop this morning on genomic innovation, resilience & the next pandemic. Participants are following Chatham House Rules, so we'll share some insight from the discussion but will not be attributing comments to any participant. #CRISPRconOneHealth

That's a wrap for #CRISPRcon2020! Thanks to all of our speakers, moderators, advisors, sponsors, and all of you who joined the discussions online! We'll be sharing more content in the coming weeks and months. Sign up for our mailing list to receive updates eepurl.com/glvRrn

Ouedraogo: What funders need to understand is access to the technology is key. And making sure that on the development of the technology, make sure local scientists are involved. Partnership is key. #CRISPRcon2020

#CRISPRcon2020 Brantley Browning @gatesfoundation @GatesOpenRes talking about making research outputs available to the whole world (all countries). Never understood why they do not require/even push for open availability of materials like plasmids. @addgene wants to know!

Cheever: When you think about those investments you think about who it will serve. Ultimately the goal here is to transition the technology to became widely available. #CRISPRcon2020

Browning: Ultimately the demand of where these products are coming from, it’s important to have feedback from developing countries whether or not they want to take the technology and employ it. Ultimately it’s a sovereign decision. #CRISPRcon2020

Browning of @gatesfoundation: Transparency is critically important. The investments that we make, we have a publicly accessible database. If we’re making investments, we need to ensure that the tools, services, and goods actually reach the intended beneficiaries. #CRISPRcon2020

.@ShahramSN: It’s really important as a society that we analyze different products… and areas of public funding that we know there will be a market failure if left only to private investment. #CRISPRcon2020

.@ShahramSN of @CivilizationVC: There is a real market failure that if something does not appear on its face profitable…then it’s not going to get the kind of funding it deserves. #CRISPRcon2020

Ouedraogo: I really think that what we need to consider today are mostly areas of accessibility of technology, availability of data, and to make sure we are not using new technologies to only serve those who already have the power. #CRISPRcon2020

Couldn't agree more. I wish funders and investors would require (not just recommend) open sharing for research of all generated materials (not just publications) to make the most of their donation dollars for research. Recommendations don't really make it happen. #CRISPRcon2020

David Winickoff: Funders and investors have a really big influence on where the technology goes. This is just a fact. #CRISPRcon2020 #CRISPR
