You have to accept that you are an aggregate of the writers you consume. They are filtered through you and intertwined with your voice. What comes out is both past and present.
I spent a lot of years worrying about this and ultimately it prevented me from writing anything at all. At this point I've just implicitly accepted that I will never escape William Faulkner or the King James Bible and the rest is just kinda colored sand that rolls in and out.
And in truth the reason I prefer to work in poetry is because, its adjacency to music renders it far more "free" to move beyond the traps of the pomo narrative.
