I forgot who I stole this from, but the "Extra credit: Send me a selfie outside my office" assignment in week 1 has led to much greater attendance in office hours. It forced them to physically locate my office, and established that I thought that visiting it was worthwhile.

Periodic programming advice: practice your touch typing skills. If you type less than 90 wpm and/or look at the keys, your typing speed is likely to be a programming bottleneck. Fortunately, it's one of the easiest bottlenecks to fix with a little deliberate practice.
Other important point that I forgot about: there are lots of other ways to enter code apart from typing — also hone your copy-paste, autocomplete, keyboard shortcut, multiple cursor, and snippet skills. (Thanks to everyone who reminded me!)
Also maybe I mean data analysis more than programming? Speed of iteration is important in both, but you definitely try out more things that don't work when doing data analysis
