The government hates recessions, not because they care about the economy, they know that they cost votes. Recessions are essential for a functioning economy, they clear out bad debt, crap companies and shitty policy. Instead of letting the economy do what it should, politicians…
Sentence them to 3 months lessons in basic economics and tax, and the study of the impact of communism v capitalism.

“I’m not an economist. I’m a Marxist.”
I'm not an economist. I'm a Marxist. I don't study 'the economy'. I study capitalism, a social system in which the wealthy & their political allies - like Rory & Alastair - control the resources everyone else needs to survive. If they approved of me, I wouldn't be doing my job.
This chap makes a very good point. Seems to understand economics and global competitiveness, and acknowledges how tax incentives work to drive growth.
Tony Blair on increasing the top rate of tax. Blair was the only Labour PM who understood economics. Very much echoes @LiamHalligan

David Lammy is attacking jury trials. He claims this is to reduce the court backlog. This is simply not true. The effect will be tiny. Watch me explain here 👇
Please email your MP and make sure you share your views on the Labour idea of stopping jury trials. Perhaps mention the Magna Carta (1215) while you are at it. You can find your MP here. members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP
When @Keir_Starmer calls time on this utterly ridiculous idea of doing away with jury trials, as he will have to do, in the vast majority of cases I will call for the resignation of my friend @DavidLammy. He knows that though because I’ve told him so.
I am going to write to my MP right now to demand that he votes NO to the LAMMY JURY DEMOLITION BILL. Will you do the same? #NotInOurName #SaveOurJuries #NoToLammy - get it trending. The jury system is our heritage, our culture and our canary in the mine against state…
Juries are one of our most important safeguards against authoritarianism. There is an emergency in our courts which needs tackling – but addressing that doesn’t require ripping up rights. theguardian.com/law/2025/dec/0…
A jury took just 17 minutes to find Jamie Michael “not guilty”. “Thank God for the jury,” Jamie told @AllisonPearson from his home in Wales. “I honestly think if I hadn’t had those normal people to basically say, ‘You’ve got to be joking, no way did this guy do anything wrong,’…
All the regrets about micarriages of justice are meaningless if jury trials are axed. Magna Carta does not introduce the right to judgement by your peers, as long as the State can afford it. Lammy blames courts' emergency for his plan to cut jury trials theguardian.com/law/2025/dec/0…
You’ve raised this in previous Finance Bills - the conservatives were in power then and prevented meaningful change to IR35 reform and the Loan Charge. Looking at where we are now with both issues, it proves your point.
🧵👇🏻 Since 2017, successive governments have failed to include a general amendment to the law as the first resolution in a Finance Bill. This may sound like an esoteric issue. It's not. It seriously limits Parliament's powers. I raised this in Parliament in a Point of Order.
Finally we have a government which has united the country! We are united in opposing their insane, unconstitutional and dangerous proposal to remove the right to jury trial from tens of thousands of people a year. Congratulations Lame Lammy and Balmy Starmer!
This Government found more money for benefits and illegal migrants. But not to get our courts sitting round the clock. So, today, David Lammy is scrapping jury trials for the vast majority of cases.
He’s right, you know

"The right to trial by jury is an important factor in delicate balance between the power of the state and the power of the individual" - Keir Starmer (1992) What changed?
In the 15 years I have been in Parliament I haven’t ever voted against the whip but sadly, if it comes to it, I will have to do so. These changes won’t touch the backlog and will not put the victims of crime at the forefront of the criminal justice system. Do right, fear no one!
We were told that the right to trial by jury for many cases must be abolished because of the criminal cases backlog. But @DavidLammy just confirmed in Parliament that even without any backlog, "it's not my expectation that these rules will change". So this isn't about backlog.…
Abolishing juries won’t repair a broken justice system, rebuilding courts and restoring access to representation is how you prevent injustice. It’s always hard to care about that…until it’s you. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
