Passive design based solutions like hardened fare gates are a great way to deter antisocial behavior like fare evasion with much less need for policing.
What makes Brooklyn Heights a suburb, and a great one, at that?
America invented the perfect suburb (Brooklyn Heights) and then never made another one
To clear California High-Speed Rail for use on EXISTING train tracks between San Jose and San Francisco alone, the environmental review process produced a final report of 8,204 pages (456 hours of reading) and took almost 14 years to complete. We need reform.

The Embankment cycleway (CS3) in London was purposefully built to be wider than was usual in order to future proof it. Some said it would hardly be used. Now there’s a decent case for widening it further.
Blue states please, I'm begging you to build housing
Here's a map of the housing shortage by state. You'll see the South and Midwest generally do better, while the West and Northeast are struggling. And California is... well, it's California.
California is on track to lose Congressional seats. We are aging as a state—all because we aren't building housing. California should be a place where graduates, seniors, families and workers can afford to live and thrive. That will take building much more housing, much quicker.
Everyone upset the Acela runs as slow as Japan’s 1970s trains: Amtrak had a plan 15 years ago to straighten tracks in CT & RI. A few thousand locals killed it, costing us 25 minutes of time savings between Boston and NYC for decades to come.
And that marks the first ever Boston → D.C. journey on @Amtrak’s NextGen Acela and a new era of passenger rail in the U.S.!
American streets are super wide and dangerous because our firefighters insist on it so they can drive huge, expensive custom fire trucks that don’t actually work better than smaller, cheaper trucks. Saying this out loud makes me sound like a crazy person, but it’s true!
Thought of @jasonc_nc today watching this little French fire truck (Renault) extend to the roof of a five story building in a medieval walled city today. What a difference it could make to have these (and build our neighborhoods accordingly) back home.
Blue states will lose electoral votes and be shut out of the presidency because they refuse to build housing to preserve the character of neighborhoods like this:
New: The ticking timebomb alarming Democrats: the 2030 reapportionment in the Electoral College. Red states gain Electoral College seats, blue states lose. The "blue wall" is gone: nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Leading global experts just confirmed what we’ve long known: Gaza is in famine. At least half a million Palestinians are facing starvation, acute malnutrition and death. And it’s likely to spread. The U.S. government is not a bystander to this genocide. We can end it today.
Famine has now been confirmed in Gaza. Over half a million people are facing the most devastating form of hunger, warns @theIPCinfo. An immediate ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access is imperative to save lives. wfp.org/news/famine-co… — via @WFP
The second biggest city in the world’s largest economy voted against allowing apartments to be built next to multi-billion dollar subway investments. Such a laughable city at this point.
LA City Council just voted to oppose the biggest pro-housing bill of the past 5 years #SB79 in a shocking display of NIMBYism. Some votes I expected but I can’t believe “progressive” @YsabelJuradoLA carried water for MAGA NIMBYs and opposed housing in wealthy areas. Shame.
Regular reminder that light rail makes little sense for the IBX bqrail.substack.com/p/los-angeles-…
Being Canadian isn’t about whining that you can’t stroll in the woods during a fire ban. It’s about knowing when to shut it down for the greater good. The real danger is leaders like Tobi who worship “freedom at all costs” even if it means watching the province burn.
🇨🇦 True north strong and free* * except not allowed to go to the woods
Ex-TTC chief David Gunn asked this question about the Eglinton-Crosstown plan in the Globe and Mail in 2011, before the construction began. #Eglinton
I really do believe post Eglinton opening a lot of people are going to be asking "Why did we put a streetcar in a tunnel?"
Cannot emphasise how bad this is. Our costs for electrification are dire entirely because we only do it in boom and bust bursts. If you have to train a workforce of 1000s every time you want to do a project it’s always going to lead to cost blowouts as they start from scratch!

What voters think nativism will mean: stop giving benefits to others, so you can focus resources on citizens What it actually means in practice: stop giving citizens benefits, so you can focus resources on punishing others
"healthcare that ought by right go to his fellow citizens" says guy taking healthcare from tens of millions of his fellow citizens
I think the 20 million people who lose their health insurance won’t consider that minutiae
I wrote a proposal for a master’s thesis about how misogyny and cat-hating are inexorably linked.

The entire western water crisis is solved by just not growing alfalfa in the desert. It's 68% of Utah's *entire* diverted water consumption.
