With millions of teens using Instagram and being automatically placed into Instagram Teen Accounts, we wanted to see if these accounts actually create a safer online experience. Check out what we found.
Boys’ experiences online matter: they can shape how they communicate, think, and feel. Check out @CommonSense’s research, which goes to show that we need to make online worlds safe by design, for everyone.
🧵Check out the key findings and takeaways from our new report, “Boys in the Digital Wild: Online Culture, Identity, and Well-Being,” that explores the digital habits of boys ages 11-17 across the US: commonsensemedia.org/research/boys-…

A year since launching their “Instagram Teen Accounts,” which they claim provide more privacy and security, we partnered with @heatinitiative and @ptogetheraction to test them. TL;DR, they’re not living up to those claims.
.@DesignItForUs is out with new research with @heatinitiative and @ptogetheraction showing that Meta is not living up to its promises on Instagram Teen Accounts: Nearly 60% of teens aged 13 to 15 reported encountering unsafe content and unwanted messages during the last 6 months

Instagram launched #TeenAccounts in Sept 2024, promising safer experiences for kids. & yet 47% of 13–15 y/os say they saw unsafe content or unwanted messages in the past month? Even worse... teens say they’ve grown “used to it.” Read more: time.com/7324544/instag…

Reminder: Big Tech like Meta are only interested in innovations that make them money. Now, they’ll use your interactions with their AI to serve you ads. This is more invasive than social media. They’re using your direct words and desires to target you.

ChatGPT’s parental controls are easy to get around. Even when they’re working, they don’t go far enough to protect kids. This is a band-aid to the serious threat that AI poses. We need real legislation to address design harms within the tech itself.

Big Tech companies would rather compete with each other over the same tech than listen to what we actually want. These mega corporations have crushed competition and are copying each other's work to outdo the other. This is what they call innovation? gizmodo.com/apple-says-oh-…
