Based on my work with Rana Hasan, @BeyzaMarchand & J Cain, I challenge Banerjee & Duflo on trade & poverty in their new book. Present at IPF conf we presented our work in, they chose to be silent in their book about it. @APanagariya @D_A_Irwin @rodrikdani m.economictimes.com/news/economy/f…

New paper I’ve coauthored with Bandyopadhyay, Basu and Chau, which looks at challenges created by task offshoring to enforcement of trade agreements and dispute settlement rules, and the role of well-enforced labor standards in such circumstances. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Via @guardian: “India did consider the US an ally. It was a country that the US was relying on as a counter to China in that region. So it had a huge geopolitical importance, but it doesn’t seem like Trump values any of that,” says Prof. @DevashishMitra_. bit.ly/4lImkec

Trump's trade war probably qualifies as the greatest madness in economic policy in a developed country after WWII: 1. All decisions are made by one single person (Trump). 2. No principles are applied. 3. No economic rationale or theory. 4. All is based on Trump's emotions. /1

This is awful. Reliable economic data is a key strength of the US economy. When Argentina and Greece faked economic data it contributed to major crises. I don't think Trump will be able to fake the data given the procedures. But there is now a risk plus an awful appearance.

Indeed, this won’t go well at all with New Delhi.

So China gets another extension while India gets smacked with 25% and threats on oil purchases. The contrast won't be lost on anyone in Delhi.

Covid had “disproportionate effects on ethnic minority groups…..Additionally, socioeconomic variables including income inequality, residential segregation and lack of health insurance coverage are…..significant contributors to these disparities.”

Congrats to England on their excellent win in a hard fought test match. Bad fielding and poor batting by the long tail did it to India. Catches certainly do win matches. I also think Gambhir is a poor coach, not well-equipped to motivate a young team.

Here's the president of the U.S. telling a private company how it must make its products, on pain of seeing a massive, government-imposed increase in its input costs. I very rarely use the word "fascist," but this is unconstitutional, fascist nonsense.
