Car bloat vehicles increases road deaths, especially vulnerable road users (pedestrian deaths up 27.3% in Australian 12 months to Jul 2025) More dead people not conducive to productivity🤯 (reduces workforce participation and economic output🤔) ping @ozprodcom

Today in Texas solar provided more than one-third of the power for 8 straight hours, peaking over 29,000 megawatts at 1:25 for the 3rd highest total ever. Last night, batteries set an all time record @ 7.3 gigawatts. Despite an 80 GW peak, prices have been <2.5c/kWh all day.
If you're struck by a car at speeds of over 50 km/h, you will likely be killed At speeds of less than 30km/h, you are very unlikely to be killed, though you still may be seriously injured What should speed limits be in urban areas? And on open roads, how careful should you be?

One solar panel of 30 kg replaces 8 tonnes of coal (or 40 barrels of oil) and 25 tonnes of CO2 Let me show you: Every solar panel has a number of wattpeak or Wp, that indicates what it produces in "ideal" (1000W/m2) sunshine conditions. So in ideal conditions it would produce…

Africa needs clean energy, too Trolls say Africa can't afford clean energy >>> The trolls are wrong <<< Africa can afford clean energy Also, Africa can't afford not to have clean energy x.com/ProfRayWills/s… 🧵

Driver assist technology saves lives. So why do so many people turn it off? I've a different headline: Driver assist technology saves lives, so why do we allow people to turn it off? Ought it not be mandated? And peeps fined or lose their car if mods are applied to turn it off
Features like lane-keeping assistance and emergency braking stop crashes – but drivers often find them annoying or confusing. @ardeshiria @Milad_Haghani @MonashUni @unimelb @UniversitySA theconversation.com/driver-assist-…
Many outlooks on EV adoption have been too bearish 🤔 x.com/ProfRayWills/s… Which is worse? Is it better to underestimate by a lot, saying it won't happen? Or overestimate knowing it's possible, then highlighting govts/business/lobbyists have acted to put the brakes on?
While many outlooks were too bearish on EV adoption, the overly bullish ones haven’t aged well either.📊 Over the last decade, a steady stream of forecasters offered rosy views on EV adoption that simply haven’t come to pass. Worse, many of them were never revisited, leaving…
I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100. Our paper is out today. 🧵
Gulp😳… “Methane emissions [in the boreal-Arctic region] were estimated to increase by ~31% under a moderate warming scenario (SSP2-4.5 by 2100), driven primarily by warming rather than permafrost thaw.”
Deeply serious. We must go for swift Renewable-Plus now. Nuclear too late for climate crisis. 'Collapse of critical Atlantic current is no longer low-likelihood, study finds'. 'Rapid cuts in carbon emissions are needed to avoid catastrophic fallout.' theguardian.com/environment/20…
Yeah, nah (Translated from Australian, means 'I don't think so') Projections of my @FSS_Au global energy model from 2018, and comparing most recent from 2025 x.com/ProfRayWills/s… All generators have down times, and outages - batteries the only reliable supply
Meeting electricity demand from data centres will require a diverse range of sources. Half of global growth in data centre power use over the next decade is set to be met by renewables Natural gas & nuclear are also expected to play a key role 👉 iea.li/3G3pk5Y

Sunday Times 2007 interview on sea level rise in #Broome, #Perth, #Rockingham & #Mandurah In 2007 I said we had to act by 2020 web.archive.org/web/2013061513… Sadly, in 2021, I am still right. In 2007 we actually still had time to #ActOnClimate Now it's a #ClimateEmergency #LeastWrong
I checked the DOE claim that sea level is rising at a lower rate than predicted by IPCC: it is false. For 2030 the IPCC predicts a best estimate 9-10 cm relative to 1995-2014 (Table 9.9). The satellite data show a rise of 74 mm until 2025. At this rate that will be 93 mm by 2030.
