The Colorado River provides water for drinking and irrigation to seven states. But how will climate change affect it? A new tool from researchers @penn_state, @PNNLab and partners uses modeling to help decision-makers plan for the future: psu.edu/news/earth-and…

What's going on out west is absolutely bonkers 10 record highs in a row...and every one of these next 6 days in the forecast is another record high. More than 2 straight weeks with record highs every day

Another record bites the dust! This is now the 10th day in a row with a record high temperature in Phoenix. The high of 109 degrees breaks previous record of 105 degrees set in 1988 and 2020. Our normal high temperature for today's date is 94 degrees. #azwx

The final data has confirmed that #Helene's moisture plume was the most intense on record for parts of six states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The integrated vapor transport (IVT) associated with Helene was up to around 1.5 times…

1-in-1000 year floods are usually confined to a small area, maybe the size of a city. The size of the 1-500 & 1-1000+ year flood (recurrence interval) is colassal with #Helene #HeleneFlooding . I can say with great certainty that I have never seen a scope like this in the US!
Estimated rainfall amounts from #Helene across the southern Appalachians had an Annual Recurrence Interval greater than 1000-years over a wide area; meaning there is less than a 0.1% chance (annual exceedance probability) of that happening in any given year.

Another upcoming project looking at drought/flood interactions. Stay tuned; we will announce 4 PhD positions soon!
I am very thrilled that our PhD Cohort SEESAW “Societal and #environmental impacts of complex #extremes in #changing world” was funded @UFZ_de !☀️💧🌳🌾 Huge thanks to a great team of PIs @m_de_Brito @Bevacqua_E and Daniel Doktor 😊 P.S. We will be hiring 4 PhDs soon📢
