We traded a thriving middle class (60% of the population) for a thriving cosmopolitan class (10% of the population) when we globalized.
Wait until SpaceX starts launching solar arrays and AI data centers into space. The tonnage disparity will be epic.
Yes, the middle class was stabilized, and protected. Yet, due to its existence, the economy is far, far larger and the technological progress we've experienced is far greater than if we didn't have it. Additionally, when it was healthy, it stabilized our politics.
Nation-state on the left. Hollow, globalized state on the right. The concentration of wealth is going to accelerate from here on out, as the damage done by globalization is amplified by the AI tech boom.
Things still work because some of the social cohesion we built up during the Cold War is still lingers. That won't last.
